Why would you want to go to the .com only and not the .uk
Normally, the .uk one is 'seen' from your host ip address, so the site routes you to it's local country site, perhaps because they can only sell services to that country.
Also as well the .uk (should be) hosted nearer to you so be quicker as well.
Others sites (apple for example) allow you to log onto any country or main site, but if you try to buy something it may then redirect you to a country site so it conforms to tax laws etc.

The last man alive on the planet, sat, alone, in a room. Suddenly, there was a knock at the door.

So Jim, have I ever told you about the old country? The songs! Oh Jim, they'd melt your face.
"Ohh I live in a shoe on Moore Street, I'm a prostitute from Newry".

works grand for me, might be that they set something in a cookie when ya hit the link from the .co.uk domain
bottom right corner andrew in the footer list hit us in there and then try going to the url for us etc directly see if it saves the preference
or edit your hosts file to force it
69.60.7.195 gizmodo.com
(although that might land you at another site pending on it's setup)

I do not get taken to the .co.uk from the .com, clear your cookies and you should be alright.
