Horseshit Roundup

The closing of a transfer window is always a good time to detail those numerous falsehoods the club peddle in trying to manage supporter anger or stifle expectations, so following the moves of 8 players from the first team squad and the addition of none, here’s where the facts fly in the face of official club statements.

  • In his interview with the Chronicle Lee Charnley told Mark Douglas that the club can’t add to the squad because we’re limited to 25 bodies.

As a general principle, January’s not an attractive window.  Another important thing to note and something often not mentioned is Premier League teams are only allowed to name 25 players – we’re currently at 25.

Despite this, the club has subsequently announced a 23 man squad exposing the pretext as utter bilge.

Sure enough, the departures of Davide Santon and Haris Vuckic mean that United have only managed to come up with the following 23 names. Though that 23 includes Steven Taylor who is knackered for the season and the permanently absent Facundo Ferreyra. “

  • The excuse for not replacing Yanga Mbiwa given in the October fans forum was that his loan to Roma took too long, they went as far as to say an agreement had been in place for a replacement.

The club added that it had initially reached a verbal agreement for a replacement defender in the summer. Because the deal with AS Roma took longer than expected, the replacement transfer was no longer possible.

However despite the club having all of January to sign a replacement and despite the situation being worsened by the loss of Steven Taylor to injury, The club failed to resolve the issue they recognised months earlier.

  • Another from Charnley’s interview in which he laid out the reasons why the club won’t sign players in January

There are very few options whereby a club can achieve the quality required and also get value. There is often a reason as to why a player might be available in January.

This is nonsensical given the January business the club have done in the past.  Even under Ashley himself.  Nolan signed in January and proved a valuable asset for a few seasons before we recouped his full transfer fee.  We trebled our money on Leon Best.  Papiss Cisse arrived in January and reinvigorated our faltering season to ensure a Europa league finish.  Debuchy arrived in January and doubled his value before departing in the summer and we still have Sissoko, a January snip at £2.2m, arguably our best remaining player with Carver insisting it would take an astronomical offer for the club to sell him. Seems to me we’ve already shown there is a lot of value to be had in the winter.

  • Asked what Ashley was doing with Rangers in the October fan forum the club response was

Sports Direct has a retail deal with Rangers, while MA has a personal investment in the club.

Yet here we are in the following February having loaned 5 players to Rangers and they’ve been told those players MUST play when fit. Private shareholders and retail partners have never held such sway anywhere else I know of.
