Who Have Been the Top Three Newcastle United Players So Far This Season?

Newcastle United are going strong in the Championship at the moment and are in the running for automatic promotion to the Premier League at the end of the season. With a very talented and strong squad, manager Rafael Benitez is doing really well, and it would come as a shock if the Magpies do not claim either of the top two places in the table.

There have been minor setbacks in recent weeks, such as the 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest away from home at the City Ground and 1-0 loss to Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park in January, but Betway still has Newcastle as the favourites to win the Championship title this season. It makes perfect sense, as with players such as Jack Colback, Jamaal Lascelles and Dwight Gayle in the team, they should be running away with the league.

Newcastle are one of the biggest clubs in England, and it came as a huge disappointment to the fans to see the team get relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2015-16 campaign. The players, though, are pulling together this campaign and a number of them are playing well. Below we have picked the top three players at St. James’ Park so far this season.

Dwight Gayle

Dwight Gayle may not have pulled up trees in the Premier League when he was at Crystal Palace, but the striker is doing exceptionally well at Newcastle. The 25-year-old, signed in the summer of 2016 for £10 million, has already scored 20 goals in the Championship this season.

The former Peterborough United striker is the top scorer in the division, and it is very likely that he will remain so until the end of the campaign. Gayle has established himself as the first-choice striker in the team and is playing with a lot of confidence under Benitez.

Jamaal Lascelles

Jamaal Lascelles is 23 years of age and is already the captain of Newcastle United. The youngster came to the fore last season when he publicly criticised his teammates. It showed his fearlessness and his maturity, and he was made the captain of the team at the start of the 2016-17 campaign.

The former Nottingham Forest defender’s performances this season have not been great in each and every match, but he has played quite well overall and is one of the best and most reliable players in the squad. The former England Under-21 international has been solid at the back and has made a number of important tackles.

Jonjo Shelvey

Jonjo Shelvey is not everyone’s cup of tea. The 24-year-old is a talented midfielder, but he often goes missing in games and can appear lethargic. This season, though, the former Liverpool man has done well for Newcastle.

The England international midfielder has scored three goals and created 48 chances in 23 Championship appearances for the Magpies so far this campaign. Shelvey has established himself as a key player in the heart of the Newcastle midfield and is playing with confidence. The former Charlton Athletic player’s ball distribution has been superb as well.

Gayle, Lascelles and Shelvey have been the three best players for Newcastle this season, but under Benitez it is all about the team. Throughout his managerial career the Spaniard has shown that he does not build his team around one particular individual. It must also be noted that the fans at St. James’ Park have played a massive role in the team’s success so far. The 50,000-odd supporters have made the place a cauldron, and opposition teams must surely take that into consideration whenever they plan their visit to Newcastle.
