Rafa Loves it When a Plan Comes Together.

Benitez describes the rebuilding job at Newcastle as a “project” and after restoring the Magpies as a Premier League club, he is now ready for phase two of his plan.

He said: “We will have normal meetings, talking about ideas and things that will happen in the future.

“We will try to put things in place that he will realise are a professional approach. We’re talking about a project and we’re not thinking about something that’s not possible.

“We will only talk about things that we can achieve.”

Benitez made 12 permanent signings last summer and one loan deal for Christian Atsu.

When asked if there would be a similar amount of arrivals this year, he said: “You never know.

“It depends on the market and prices. Sometimes you want to do things and you can’t because they are too expensive.

“Sometimes you can, but you have to put everything together.

“Once we know where we are we will make decisions about every single player.”

The arrival of a much-needed centreback was next on Benitez agenda, although lorian Lejeune thought he was being pranked when Rafa Benitez phoned to offer him the chance of a move to Newcastle.

“Getting a call from Rafael Benitez was absolutely amazing, and I could only say yes. It was like a dream,” Lejeune said.

“When I got the call, I thought it was a prank so I didn’t say anything. After a few hours, I said, ‘Yes, that’s Rafael Benitez’, so I had to say yes.

“He was very important to my decision. For many years, my career was going up and down and up and down.

“He’s a great coach. Everyone knows him and he has won lots of trophies – that is Rafa Benitez. Newcastle is a very big club with a fantastic history.
