Newcastle In the World Cup – Part 1

It’s getting to the business end of the premier league season, and with that finishing up we are a short few weeks from the biggest competition in the world, the World Cup

So who from the Newcastle squad is likely to feature? Over the coming weeks we’ll have a look at who could be on the plane, starting with representatives for Serbia and England today.

Aleksandar Mitrovic – Serbia

Mitrovic and Serbia are heading for Russia after qualifying out of Group D.

The Magpies forward has scored six goals in his last six internationals  which has helped his Serbia side get through the tough group

Currently on loan at Fulham and doing well with the extra game time, could he be a feature in the top scorers in any World Cup Predictions?

Jonjo Shelvey and Jamaal Lascelles – England

A long shot chance of both of these being included in a world cup squad, but each have been in exceptional form as of late, with Lascelles living up to the captain’s armband leading from the back for Newcastle. Lascelles form has had him linked with big money moves out of Tyneside but will this same attention get himself to Russia?

Shelvey seems to have regained the form that once made him hot property as a youngster, no doubt the effect of having Benetiz and his excellent man management behind him, and now must be in the spotlight for consideration in an England squad.

Both sides will face tough opposition, with Mitrovic going up against tournament favourites Brazil, featuring the experienced Thiago Silva leading them out of defence.

If the English duo manages to make the plane they’ll come up against two weaker sides, but heavily offset against a Belguim squad filled with young talent like Kevin DeBruyne, will they have matured enough after the Euros to be a contender for the competition? We’ll soon find out
