Jonjo Shelvey – Will England miss him this summer?

Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has missed out on a place in England’s World Cup squad despite his stunning form in 2018.

Shelvey has helped Newcastle finish in the top half of the Premier League in their first season back in the top flight, acting as the Magpies’ creative fulcrum from central midfield.

The 25-year-old boasts a passing range few can compete with and his temperament – that has so often been questioned – has improved his well.

He hasn’t picked up a single booking in January 2018, but was not part of Gareth Southgate’s squad for Russia.

There has been a genuine clamour from former internationals for him to be included in the squad but they have seemingly fallen on deaf ears.

“What I like about Jonjo is that he is different from the players that they have already and he can do a lot of things. And for three weeks, he can be a very important player if he is a part of things.

“But it’s not my decision, he knows his group, the players he has, what he wants to do.

Many pundits would have preferred his selection at this summers world cup, with ability to dictate the tempo and pick a pass, and it seemed to be between Shelvey and Loftus-cheek who did eventually get the nod. With recent passing examples from the friendly last weekend they may regret not taking the newcastle man over his nearest rival in the selection ranks.

Stat wise the Chelsea youngster (on loan at C.Palace) seems to have the edge and that may have been all that mattered, we’ll find out this summer.
