It’s time for Newcastle FC to pull up its socks

The previous season of the Premier League turned out to be a disappointing affair for the lads from Newcastle. They stood 13th after managing winning just 12 of the 38 matches played during the season. Lack of consistency has been the biggest pain point ailing the club in recent times. Newcastle don’t have people who can spearhead the club’s forward line. The defence lines look equally vulnerable.

Back in June, Rafa Benitez, the club’s manager left the club after a string of poor results. Fans were left fuming after Benitez left the club. He was replaced by Steve Bruce.

The club had extended a contract to Benitez, but he declined it after the club failed to give him assurances regarding the transfer budget. He also wanted to improve the club’s training facilities.

At present, the biggest problem hindering the club’s progress is the forward line’s inability to score goals. The club has a couple of senior strikers in Dwight Gayle and Yoshinori Muto. The problem is that both of these players have 22 Premier League goals between them in as many as 116 appearances.

To make matters worse, Joselu left the club in order to explore greener pastures of the La Liga. It is a golden opportunity for both of the club’s ‘seasoned’ strikers to make their presence felt this time around. For quite some time now, the club has been searching for a striker who can score more than 20 goals during a single Premier League season.

Let us take a closer look at the club’s latest signings:

Andy Caroll has been roped into the side from West Ham United in order to add some much-needed depth to the club’s forward line. Joelinton (Brazil) has also been brought into the squad from Hoffenheim. His arrival at St. James’ Park is expected to add a tinge of freshness and dynamism into the squad.

A silver lining

It is indeed heartening to see that Newcastle United have kept most of their squad intact. The likes of Dwight Gayle, Yoshinori Muto, Christian Atsu and DeAndre Yedlin are an integral part of the squad. No matter how formidable a team you are, if the core of your team is not intact, then getting people to work together becomes a major issue.

Cohesion is the need of the hour

In order to win matches, you need to score goals. And in order to score goals, you need to play as a single consehive unit.  In recent times, Newcasle have showcased glimpses of their on-field brilliance, but these have been too few and far between.
