Newcastle United vs Manchester United: Match Preview & Predictions

The international break is over, and domestic EPL action is back underway. ‘The Magpies’ will host Manchester United with a confidence boost from recent performances, but can Steve Bruce prepare his team for a vengeful Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his ‘Red Devils’.

Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce will be hoping and praying his team’s confidence can rollover after the two-week break, their previous 3-1 victory over Burnley was just the icing on the cake after a great start to the English Premier League 2020/2021 season.

I expect Newcastle to welcome the talented Manchester United this weekend with open arms, hoping to put on a strong outing against a top-ranked side. Even with a concerning amount of injuries, Newcastle has adapted this season and more importantly, taken points from all but one game – a loss to Brighton.

Expected Newcastle United Starting Eleven – Karl Barlow, Emil Kraft, Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles, Jamal Lewis, Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey, Jeff Hendrick, Miguel Almiron, Allan Saint-Maximin & Callum Wilson.

Through Newcastle’s excellent results, some cracks have shown, and if it was not for the heroics of goal keep Karl Barlow, their point taken from Tottenham might not have come. A late minute saviour from a VAR decision assisted Callum Wilson in securing the equalizer, but it should be noted, Tottenham recorded twenty-three shots against Newcastle.

Coming close to an embarrassing Carabao Cup fixture loss against lower league Newport County was another fortunate bit of luck for ‘The Magpies’. Their 3-1 win over Burnley did prove complementary offerings, and maybe their recent string of good results is all that was needed to get back on track.

Manchester United

The boys in red from Manchester have not shown the brightest start to the season; their slow start will need to be rectified heading into a St. James Park versus a self-assured Newcastle United squad.

If anyone needed the two-week international break – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did. An embarrassing 6-1 defeat to Tottenham could not have come at a worse time, coming off an EPL Cup exit via lower-league Luton, a 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace, and a 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa. United can’t find the formation which ended last season on a high.

Expected Manchester United Starting Eleven – David de Gea, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, Donny van de Beek, Marcus Rashford & Mason Greenwood.

Since Anthony Marshall is suspended, van de Beek should make his first start of the season, and the squad should remain the same as their previous fixture with a lack of alternatives.

Newcastle vs. Manchester United Prediction

With an evident talent-advantage over Newcastle, after their shameful 6-1 defeat, they are going to need to impose this talent early and often. The back four against Spurs put on a horrendous performance, Maguire will need to assess his leadership and help his defense avoid countless mistakes.

Newcastle defeated an almost identical squad the last time these teams met at St. James Park. If anything, the Newcastle squad is now stronger and more confident but that doesn’t make them instant favorites, by checking the Bookmaker’s odds, the probabilities for Newcastle are slim and this trend continues across the bookie’s opinions, they are backing Manchester United as the clear favorite – which I am very weary off supporting.

Key Statistics

  • Newcastle has scored two goals or more in six of their previous twenty home fixtures.
  • Manchester United have conceded at least two goals in six of their previous 20 away matches.
  • Newcastle has conceded one goal or less in thirteen of their previous twenty home games.
  • Manchester United have scored one goal or less in ten of their last twenty away fixtures.
  • Newcastle has won 35% of their previous 20 home games.
  • Manchester United have lost 30% of their last 20 away matches.

It would be foolish to ignore the value on the board with Newcastle this week, however, where I do believe Newcastle could add to United’s misery and walk away with a close 2-1 victory. The betting value lies in the ‘draw no bet’ market, which will return your betting stake if they draw.
