Happy Face 29 Posted January 19, 2009 Share Posted January 19, 2009 .com Having been relieved of his position as Nottingham Forest Manager late last year, it's believed that United have now offered Colin Calderwood (pictured) an unspecified position on the SJP coaching staff. During a playing career that spanned almost twenty years, the 43 year-old Scottish international defender appeared for Mansfield Town, Swindon Town, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest & Notts County. Calderwood then returned to Spurs as reserve team coach before moving into club management with Northampton Town in 2003, taking the City Ground post in 2006. From a Toon perspective, Calderwood the player had a somewhat chequered career in opposition to Newcastle: March 1993 scored the winner for Swindon in a 2-1 victory at the County Ground from a corner awarded after the referee missed a blatant handball. May 1995 sent off at SJP for two yellow cards in a midweek 3-3 draw with Spurs. December 1996 part of the Spurs defence as Gerry Francis watched his side get humped 7-1 at SJP. April 1998 crippled substitute Keith Gillespie within four minutes of the Newcastle player's arrival from the bench in a 2-0 defeat at White Hart Lane. Ended the game confronting Newcastle fans behind the Park Lane goal. October 1998 sent off at White Hart Lane for two yellow cards in a 2-0 victory over Newcastle. August 1999 played a major role in Alan Shearer's red carding at SJP against Aston Villa in the season opener, causing us to write that: Calderwood deserves specific mention for his feigning injury and persistent provocation of Shearer. How this poor imitation of a defender managed to avoid a booking or mild dismembering from crowd or player remains a mystery. Hopefully he'll get his comeuppance one day. We do now firmly believe that someone has managed to obtain our own "most hated" list and is intent on bringing the objects of our loathing to Tyneside one by one - Bowyer, Souness, Allardyce, Barton, Wise, Calderwood.... who's next, David Speedie? Hoddle to take over in the summer... Wouldn't suprise me, he's currently running a training camp for young players released from English clubs to try and get them back in the game, a second chance. The 44-year-old was at the club's North Tyneside headquarters on Monday morning as the Magpies continued their preparations for Wednesday's trip to Manchester City. And boss Joe Kinnear has welcomed his arrival on Tyneside. "We have Colin Calderwood on board now," he said. "He will be joining us until the end of the season to bring something else to our backroom team." Calderwood left Nottingham Forest as manager in December after two-and-a-half years at the City Ground. He has previously managed Northampton Town and enjoyed a 19-year playing career which involved spells at Mansfield Town, Swindon Town, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, Forest and Notts County.
