I take your points on board marra, but I've been to Cardiff & Swansea, without feeling intimidated by the police. Never have I been to Glasgow (for a match) but I hardly think that 2 -3,000 SAFC supporters would be classed as "small time", as it is far more than a large number of SPL teams get playing at home. It would, I think, be intereresting to see the average number of away supporters attending Rangers/Celtic matches, in the SPL. Also, if Strathclyde can handle (around) 3,000 without problems (no herding and with smiles) how come Northumbria could not handle 40 to 50, without confrontation?

SAFC supporters were praising Strathclyde to the eyeballs, for their (seemingly - I can't believe that it, really was) relaxed attitude. No "herding", no "confrontation", just good seemingly good, old fashioned, policing! Whilst, no doubt, utilising all of the modern facilities available, without them being used in a "confrontational" manner.

What I find interesting is that Northumbria Police are now changing their tune, whilst attempting to hold the high moral ground. 1) They are now claiming that they had officers injured - Yesterday their press release did not make that claim, stating (only) that Earl, Cleo and her two brothers Floyd and Diesel were battered and bruised after they were kicked by fans intent on violence and stamped on while on the floor. 2) They have, also, now started to claim that They had "intelligence" (contradiction in terms maybe) that there was a planned "meet" between SAFC and NUFC supporters, at Central Station. Now, that is, really, a wierd one as the only SAFC supporters on the train expected it to go directly to Sunderland and not Newcastle - It had been announced that it would at half time, adding that all SAFC supporters were urged to change their previous arrangements and utilise it! 3) They have referred it to the IPCC. They have done that knowing that it was being referred anyway. Why is it that other police forces seem to have learned that successful managing (policing) is best achieved by adopting a friendly, smiling, helpful approach? I refer, particularly, to Strathclyde who have to handle Celtic and Rangers fixtures, together with South Wales Police (Cardiff & Swansea). They don't seem to attract negative publicity, nor have major problems. Northumbria, South Yorks and The Met seem, though, to have ongoing problems. I wonder why should that be?

I know that the guy received "rave" reports after the West Brom game, but I've never seen him play. Of course, newspaper reports are never reliable. All she has done is to take the NP PR statement (which I linked in my opening post) and then embellish it, but then embedded a video (on the website version) which negates the "thrust" of her own story - witness the "officer" kicking a guy on the floor, the size of the pool of blood (approx. 2/3 feet across) and the attitude of another "officer", late in the video, when he realised he was being filmed! I would repeat that I have no sympathy for any hooligan (SAFC, NUFC or any other) who sets out to cause trouble because he (or she) deserves everything that comes back but sometimes the police "screw up" and allow their own thugs to run riot. As I said in my opening post, I was not there but I think that what happened last Saturday is going to have major repercusions for NP. I couldn't agree more but, if you had bothered to read the accounts before you attempted to pontificate/make cheap points you would have realised that there were only around 50 SAFC supporters on the "soccer special", who were faced by 20/30 police plus unmuzzled dogs. I think that negates just about every word you have written!

Ok marra, I am going to bite - You've been fishing for long enough! Please read the threads and then you will prevent yourself looking, repeatedly, like a moron. Your last point (regarding transport) was asinine - the SAFC supporters were told (announcement at half time) that a "soccer special" had been laid on, from Edinburgh to Sunderland and requested that all SAFC supporters utilise it. This turned out to be a complete lie - it ran to Newcastle and ONLY those that boarded it had a problem. Fortunately, the majority of the 4,000 or so SAFC supporters attending the game chose to ignore the offer/request and continued with their previous arrangements. Those arriving in Newcastle before (or after) the "soccer special" walked through the Central Station without any hassle from the police, or anyone else. The "soccer special" (which contained only around 50), however, seems to have been targeted. As I said, please read and learn!

Only reason there's any coverage is cos it happened in Newcastle. I've seen that photo before it was used in the thread on the SMB and then used twice on here. I could be wrong but is it not something to do with the Roma Ultras? Nobody will ever get me to condone any form of football violence but something (for me) smells here! So many first hand accounts, so much video and then the police put out a statement accusing fans of attacking police dogs! Can anyone, seriously, believe that? Sure, 40 Sunderland fans decide to attack 20/30 police (with unmuzzled dogs) and succeed in damaging/injuring the dogs, with no mention of the 4 guys put into hospital, the others with dog bites and the pools of SAFC fans' blood on the concourse. I could be wrong but I think that (finally) Northumbria's Finest are going to get what they have deserved for many years. This case WILL (despite their attempts) make the courts, with the resultant media coverage - The SFS are now heavily involved! Strathclyde & South Wales Police have to look after (police) games involving, arguably, some of the most passionate/volatile supporters in the U.K. (Rangers/Celtic & Cardiff/Swansea). It seems that they have learned that the best approach is to be friendly, smile, be helpful and only as a last resort confront. Northumbria & South Yorks, it would seem, have much to learn. My attitude would be exactly the same if it had (with the same, apparent, evidence) involved supporters of any club - Including NUFC!!

I, though, think training is a prelude to the "serious stuff", where points are at stake. We, obviously, will have to agree to differ on that!! He's clearly talking about Shearer sorting out the ridiculous state the club had been brought to morale, discipline and training-wise by the series of Keegan leaving/no manager and up for sale/JFK and still up for sale/JFK getting ill and no manager (although if rumours are true JFK was basically the same as no manager).... which, of course, goes on to effect results on the pitch. It'd would be fair enough to have a piss around whilst just doing general fitness work (and would in fact help the monotony), but pay quite serious attention when you're being drilled not to let another ridculously soft corner in, even if it's not "fun" doing it 50 times till you get it right. Or do Sunderland players habitually dress up in Laurel and Hardy outfits and only slip out of them for competitive games?
