Thankfully over here we’re different to England in that private parking fines are levied on the driver rather than the car so any time I get a ticket I just send an email saying that several people have use of the car and I don’t know who was driving at the time and that’s the end of it. Not much help to you, granted.

    All right, Chris Huhne

Given the geopolitical situation, us finding out that our nuclear deterrent doesn't work can't be great news.

  3. Anti-abortion, pro-death penalty, only came out to his parents "shortly before his wedding", cites the Old Testament as his favourite book, and lobbies for gambling companies. He seems nice.

A man wakes up one morning to find a bear on his roof. He looks in the yellow pages and sure enough, he finds an ad for “Bear Removers.”

He calls the number, and the bear remover says he’ll be over in 30 minutes. The bear remover arrives and gets out of his van. He’s got a ladder, a baseball bat, a shotgun and a mean old pit bull.

“What are you going to do?” the homeowner asks.

“I’m going to put this ladder up against the roof, then I’m going to go up there and knock the bear off the roof with this baseball bat. When the bear falls off, the pit bull is trained to grab his testicles and not let go. The bear will then be subdued enough for me to put him in the cage at the back of the van.”

He hands the shotgun to the homeowner.

“What’s the shotgun for?” asks the homeowner.

“If the bear knocks me off the roof, shoot the dog.”

  5. He's solid, he'll be getting paid considerably more than he could make elsewhere (even if it's buttons in the grand scheme of things) and he seems to like living in the region, so it makes good enough sense. If he's still not getting much playing time a year from now then he's still young enough to make a move.

  6. I see now that some of the players did refuse to take part altogether, so fair play to them.

I take the point about funding. I presume that's also why the Irish basketball federation said it couldn't guarantee the Israeli players' safety if the match venue had been switched to Dublin as per one request (because it wouldn't have been in a position to handle the potential protests). It's a shame that some sports have the means to deal with that kind of thing and others don't, so you end up with situations like this that satisfy nobody.
