This list, FA Youth Cup Finalist, from 85/86 to 03/04, sends a shiver down my spine. Why so few outstanding young players make it in their senior football career?

Starting from 96/97, only

Gary Cahill, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Luke Moore, Andrew Taylor, Kieran Richardson, Adam Johnson, James Morrison, Liam Ridgewell, Wayne Rooney, Moritz Volz, Steve Sidwell, Jermaine Pennant, Jeremie Aladiere, Justin Hoyte, Calum Davenport, Chris Kirkland, Michael Carrick, Joe Cole, Richard Dunne, Leon Osman, Tony Hibbert, Francis Jeffers, David Dunn, Harry Kewell, Paul Robinson, Jonathan Woodgate, Jamie Carragher, Michael Owen, Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard, Phil Neville

can count themselve as premiership players (benefit of doubt given to Johnson, Jeffers etc)

Gary McSheffrey can count himself unlucky not to have tasted premiership yet.

This is 32 out of 236. Make it 31 out of 220 to roughly eliminate repition, the percentage is 14%.

Admittedly Premiership do not merely consist of youth cup winners. But can anyone tell me why so many players who have achieved well in their teens done poorly in their adulthood?
