In fact it actually could be seen as saying that all plans need to be signed off by the board. Support can mean so many things. My initial reaction took it as 'support you to get them right'. Park Life 70 Posted February 6, 2007 Share Posted February 6, 2007 Tom Hicks has outlined Liverpool's new owners' determination to offer manager Rafa Benitez the support he needs to make the club champions. On Tuesday, Hicks, along with his American business partner George Gillett Jnr, was presented as the new custodian of the Premiership club. Reports have suggested the duo will provide Benitez with a huge transfer kitty in a bid to close the gap on Chelsea and Manchester United at the top of the table. While Hicks was not willing to divulge any figures, he confirmed the intention to back Benitez's plans for moulding a competitive squad. "Talking to Rafa this morning, he was talking about you need to combine keeping your core players, the need to bring in some top star players and also the need to develop your own young players," said Hicks at a press conference live on Sky Sports News. "Young players are the lifeblood of any team and we talked a lot about how we could improve the whole development process. "We're not going to put a budget on what we are going to do. We will let Rafa and Rick (Parry) bring us their plans, then we'll support those plans. "If we have the chance to get a great player, we'll get great players, but that's Rick's job, that's Rafa's job to help bring us those requests." Hicks also confirmed that he will be the club's co-chairman, along with Gillett, with David Moores taking on the role of Honorary Life President. He added: "We decided the tallest partner can be chairman! "We are going to be co-chairmen. We are equal partners in every sense of the word and we will each have one of our sons on the board as well. "That's the kind of relationship you have to have to be successful. George and I feel we now have that knowledge and confidence to be successful. "Both of our styles is to be successful, but in the sports industry you depend on the people who run that business. What about when we're playing in the league then, as they seem to be laughing at us generally. Why would someone below us in the league - or in a lower division - laugh at us ? Besides, what happens on message boards doesn't happen in real life so I wouldn't worry about it EDIT/PS You don't really understand football fan banter do you ? Is that a joke? The statement was greeted with astonishment and then a deathly hush descended on the floor as the fat Geordie Chairman proudly announced the shock transfers who he nearly signed for the club. Newcastle UTD shares rocketed to 1.81 on hearing the news of these near signings. Jose Mourinho was quick to reply on Sky Sports News about the statement. He said "How can Chelsea compete with Newcastle on these terms, they are nearly buying all the top players, I see reports on TV that they nearly signed David Beckham and then only 24 hours later Fat Freddy tells the stock exchange that they nearly bought Dirk Kuyt in the summer, It is just spoiling game". Sir Alex Ferguson was also quick to comment "This is ridiculous, Newcastle are once again nearly signing all the top players available, they nearly signed Wayne Rooney and they nearly signed Ronaldo. The whole thing needs sorting out or else Newcastle Utd's nearly signing players policy will ruin our beautiful game". A spokesman from Newcastle UTD PLC said these words in retaliation. "I have heard Jose Mourinhos and Alex Fergusons comments, and just because we are actively nearly signing the top players in the world does not mean that we are spoiling the game, we are just raising the standards of nearly signing players; players of the calibre of Rooney, Ronaldinho, Zidane and Ronaldo were also nearly signed". Outside St James park a crowd of 4 gathered on hearing the shock news, one fan called Keegan Beardsley who had just paid 333 for a shirt worth 32.50, and had the words "Nearly Beckham" proudly displayed on the back, had this to say via an interpreter (no one could understand him) "Arl reet, dee yee smurk tarbs? Wor gannin pleeces this cloob like...wor nerrly gannin fer Christiano Ronaldo next week an arl like!" Fat Freddy has since stated that, "This clubs policy for nearly signing players will continue for the forseeable future. We see no reason to bow to the demands of other clubs and will scour the earth for players who will come close to joining us". "We must keep our fans happy, and what better way than for them to see world class players almost joining Newcastle Utd, it keeps them all coming back in their droves, and shirt sales are continuing to rocket due mainly to the talent we nearly succeeded in getting in".
