Wish You Were Here came in at number four, The Wall at 12 and Animals at 25.

The poll involved more than 15,000 listeners of the digital radio station Planet Rock.

Well it depends on what counts as "rock" - typically a top 10 rock album chart would be consisting of classic rock albums. There is the one exception of a grunge album, but there is no space for Metallica (being metal, and "selling out" at a later decade, which is also gives Ten a surprise appearance). Black Sabbath however, I am more surprised are not there.

Anyway the best Metallica album is Ride the Lighning, from the thrash-metal period, even though the "black album" is the only album that would be a contender for that chart.

nevermind shits on ten. it sold about 3 times as many copies and is prob a candidate for number one spot. also where is black sabbath, metallicas black album etc..

Always a guarantee of quality

Yes, sales isn't relevant in which is best! Though in this case the one that's sold the most is the best of the two.

I never really liked Ten at the time but I listen to it far more than Nevermind now.

Take out Bat Out of Hell, throw in The Wall and you'd have possibly the most sensible resolution to a public vote ever.

Nevermind = 'I hate myself, I want to die' music. I could abide Nirvana when I went through that whole depressed teenager phase but now I can't listen to them. If you want a good grunge band try Soundgarden.

Harsh! Actually Bleach was a better album musically than Nevermind but as "best" should be measured on many things including influence on other musicians, then Nevermind should be in the list.

As for the good grunge band, Soundgarden were good but there were better in:

Tad

Big Black

Killdozer

Mudhoney

Helmet

Screaming trees

Alice in chains

Jesus lizard

Even "the melvins" if you want to hear what Kurt use to rave about.

Or if you want the english equivilant and a band that the world missed:

Swervedriver!

The first album "raise" was probably the best but least heard album released in 1989/90.

Even Billy Corgan mentioned them on a music program (Rage) he was selecting clips for on Saturday night.

I own an alarmingly low number of these.

I've been meaning to 'backdate' (in that I wasn't aware of them when they first came out) my CD collection for sometime, but have never got round to it.

i knew id get a sarky reply to that. in pop music it doesnt guarantee quality no. but in rock/heavy metal, because it is specialist taste, if it sells a few million it usually indicates its decent. regardless of whether it selt 10 or 10,000,000 copies how can you possibly say that ten is better than nevermind! if nirvana hadnt brought grunge to the worlds attention pearl jam would not have sold a fraction as many albums as they have

which one is that

Actually thought the thread would have developed with posters posting their favourite rock/pop albums that they could think of....

I've only got 3 of the original list ie numbers 2, 3 and 7. I have never got into Pink Floyd, I know they are a great band but just not my taste.
