England Squad

Steve McClaren has named his 23-man squad for England's upcoming Euro 2008 qualifiers against Israel and Andorra.

Newcastle ace Scott Parker was the surprise pick for McClaren, who also welcomed back Bayern Munich midfielder Owen Hargreaves following a broken leg.

David Beckham's injury gave the former Middlesbrough boss one less headache as Hargreaves, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Michael Carrick and Parker contest the central midfield places.

Aaron Lennon could well be given a right wing start with Kieron Dyer or Stewart Downing on the left supplying the ammunition for likely strikers Wayne Rooney and Andy Johnson.

Watford's on-loan Ben Foster started England's friendly against Spain although Paul Robinson is likely to be back between the sticks against Israel and Andorra.

Rio Ferdinand and John Terry should make up the spine of England's backline with Ashley Cole and Gary Neville the possible starting full-backs.

Cole is suspended for England's game with Israel and with Wayne Bridge also out injured Jamie Carragher could well fill in at left-back.

Peter Crouch's injury meant he was unavailable while there was no place for Aston Villa's Gareth Barry or Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton.

England's 23-man squad:

Robinson (Tottenham), Foster (Man Utd, on loan at Watford), Carson (Liverpool, on loan at Charlton); G Neville (Man Utd), Richards (Man City), Ferdinand (Man Utd), Terry (Chelsea, capt), Woodgate (Real Madrid, on loan at Middlesbrough), Carragher (Liverpool), A Cole (Chelsea), P Neville (Everton); Gerrard (Liverpool), Hargreaves (Bayern Munich), Lampard (Chelsea), Lennon (Tottenham), Parker (Newcastle), Carrick (Man Utd), Dyer (Newcastle), Downing (Middlesbrough); Johnson (Everton), Rooney (Man Utd), Defoe (Tottenham), D Bent (Charlton).

widely documented that barton not getting in the squad because of other (frank lampard) influences.

not that he's the best player england have or anything.

since when have england squads been dictated by chubby cunts who are not the player they were 2 years ago.

If its only Lampard with the problem then he shouldn't have been forced out but if there are a few players who don't want him in there then thats fair enough. No one should dictate to the manager who to pick but team spirit and togetherness is a factor that has to be taken into account regardless of ability.

your right about lampard he's a good goalscoring midfielder. and there is the dilemma of gerrards rather patchy form. Lampard will score 20 goals because he plays higher up the pitch than most and the partnership between him and ballack is a mystery, both are good players, ballack for example the better playmaker, lampard capable of the hard yards required to get into the box late and score deflected goals...

my point is probably moot but here goes...

players like joey barton and gareth barry etc need to be getting in the squad because they are younger and the future of england. i know bartons a lairy c*nt and barry is not the worlds quickest (for example) but both should be good enough to play against israel, and both should be part of the future of england IMHO (even as squad players)....

1625: GOAL Tottenham 2-0 Watford

You'll think I'm joking here but believe me, I'm not... Paul Robinson's free-kick is missed by Watford's defence, bounces and then sails over Watford keeper Ben Foster's head. Unbelievable. England's number one scores against England's number two. Training should be fun this week.

Jenas scored as well, fuck off.

because lampards not really done it for england in the last year....

time for some new blood perhaps?

I don't disagree that it's maybe time for new blood. Should include Gerrard in that too though.

Doesn't really explain why people think Lampard is to blame for Barton being in there. Does he actually pick the squad?
