Scottish Mag 3 Posted March 23, 2007 Share Posted March 23, 2007 In the UK, Sony has solved the problem of how to sell PlayStation 3 games consoles: just give each buyer a free 46-inch Bravia W series TV set! That's what Sony UK's Ray Maguire did last night to pep up last night's launch at the Virgin Megastore on Oxford Street, London. Gamesindustry.biz reports: Although only a handful turned up to spend the night in the store, by 11pm on Thursday the queue had grown to over 100 people. With just 20 minutes to go until the console officially went on sale, Sony UK boss Ray Maguire stepped up to address the crowd in front of a large flatscreen TV. "This is a 46-inch Bravia W series. It's an award-winning flat panel," he said. "And do you know what the good news is, guys? I'm going to give you one free." It seems 125 TV sets worth around £250,000 ($500,000) were given away. Virgin Megastore didn't have much competition as both HMV and Game had abandoned plans for midnight launches. You look at the Wii and it's clearly been designed for playing in a group situation, which I think is a concession by Nintendo of the more social appeal nowadays. Loads of one player games are class and the ones on the Wii (like Mario, Zelda, etc.) will probably be amongst the best games on the console again. Multi-player games are a laugh too though. Something like the WII is better (in fun if perhaps not technical merit) for less £££'s. Sony should remember that the PS1’s success was largely on the back of other companies somewhat taking the piss because of their previous domination. In fairness it is a good one at that and you wont buy a stand alone blue ray player for less. However, blue ray isnt exactly no 1 at the moment with HD DVD prob leading the way. That said, the porn industry usually has a massive influence on what will be the accepted medium. Too early to say how well the ps3 will do, really needs a good few months to see how quickly the software developers can push it to improve their titles. I still have a ps2 and its been gathering dust for months unused, yet Ill probably upgrade to a ps3 when the price drops a bit (which it will). Then that will prob sit there gathering dust as well...
