Boss keeps up probe

Newcastles under-fire players can expect further recriminations upon their return to training this morning as an irate Glenn Roeder strives to eradicate the failings that have wrecked his Intertoto Cup ambitions.

United lost 2-1 at Portsmouth on Saturday and, with Roeder admitting his troubled team need to win their four remaining top-flight fixtures to stand any chance of Continental qualification, it does not look as though there will be European football at St James's Park next season.

It was not so much the result but the performance at Fratton Park that angered a manager who pulled no punches with a frank post-match condemnation that suggested he had been pushed to breaking point. Roeder has told those he considers the worst culprits what he thinks of them. But, considering the scale of the problems he has identified in his dressing room, the inquests will continue, the implications serious.

"I just won't have it," insisted a manager whose distress at his team's first-half efforts led him to administer the most-severe admonishment of his Tyneside tenure during a heated interval exchange.

"I would rather have players with less natural ability who I know will spill their guts week in, week out for Newcastle United than what I saw out there. We carried three or four players (in the first half). You might get away with carrying one poor performance in a team at this level but not three or four. There were too many whose performances were not good enough, and certain players just did not show enough energy, drive and desire.

"What angers me the most is that we have talented players in the squad who have no self-motivation. I had players out there who were not giving it everything. That is unacceptable and I find it amazing.

"The easiest thing to bring to a game of football is desire to win and a motivation to run around but we had talented players who did not do that and I let them know at half time who they were.

"The Premiership is not like other leagues in Europe. It has its own style. You must give your absolute all in every game. It's an exciting league because the tempo is flat-out, but there were some players who did not do that and I'm not accepting it, I don't care who they are.

"If you're going to solve problems you need to admit there is a problem and we had a problem, we were poor. We came out for the second half a different team, but if you have to do that (read the riot act at half time) in every game, then those players have to move on because that's not what I want at the club.

"I never single out any individual (in public) - I'll do that back at the training ground. But there were players who got on that bus who know my feelings about them."

Roeder had travelled to Fratton Park determined to improve the club's chances of sneaking into the Intertoto Cup, but United's 15th league defeat this season has made such a scenario almost impossible.

"We had to beat Portsmouth to have a chance," admitted the frustrated 51-year-old. "I never give up with anything but I realise this was a game we needed to win. We're in a situation where we will have to win our four remaining games and see what the teams above us do."

That Chelsea are Newcastle's next opponents underlines the scale of a challenge that appears beyond Roeder's men. That the injured list is growing again will make it harder still.

Although Michael Owen and Shola Ameobi will hope to take significant steps closer to their respective comebacks this week, Scott Parker, Antoine Sibierski and Kieron Dyer all missed Saturday's game.

Dyer's absence is a particular concern given that it relates to his hamstrings. Craig Moore and Damien Duff were both injured at Fratton Park and, although that is nothing new for the former player, the latter's plight appeared to be severe. "He (Duff) took a couple of heavy tackles on his ankle, and it has swollen up," added Roeder. "He will have a scan and although there's no point guessing until we see what damage is done, it must make him a doubt for Chelsea."

So Roeder wants to single out certain people and criticise them for failing to do their job properly? If thats the way he wants to be I hope Fat Freddy gets him into the office this morning and tells him a few truths about the shit job that he is doing...

Hypocritical bastard..

I really hope this is just shite talk to the media and it really hasn't taken him this long to realise that we have players who don't give a fuck when the rest of us spotted it a long time ago.

Well, he should work on his motivation skills if he wants happy people around him. Just blaming everyone but himself won't help...

He's spot on in what he's saying, and it's been going on for years - the contracts we put these people on is one of the biggest problems imo. They are getting paid wages which far outweigh the market rate for someone of their abilities, and they start believing their own hype - if you had them somewhere like Reading on £25k a week instead of at Newcastle on £45k a week, you'd get performances out of them that suggested a player that wanted to move on to bigger and better things. At Newcastle they get the rewards the day they join the club.

Having said that he's correct in his assessment, you would see more motivated players if they were playing in a system that worked, for a coach who could motivate. The players are probably as sick as the rest of us at the total lack of cohesion and shape to the team, and they can't make that happen for themselves. It takes top coaching, and it takes strong personalities to instil belief, and we've got none of that at this club.

I don't know a lot about Nigel Pearson, but fucking Terry Mac and Lee Clark, man. If they were running a summer soccer school, fair enough, but a Premiership side. It's painfully obvious that there's a complete lack of direction from the coaching team (look at Titus Bramble CONTINUING to just boot the ball long constantly, or Martins' horrendous movement and touch - is anyone actually trying to address this stuff? What other club allows their players to just keep getting away with this sort of thing?), and what player is going to feel motivated under those circumstances?

For what it's worth, Supermac made an excellent statement a couple of weeks ago on the Legends about this, saying they desperately need a quality attacking minded Number 2 or Head Coach at the club. We basically have two centre halfs making all the tactical decisions, and having someone who can coach strikers would mix it up a bit.

Was anybody at the game on Saturday?

Just wondering who the 4 players were.

Also, if Dyer's hamstrings are dodgy, I'd rather he was left out until next season. Or put down.

While I've got nothing against Lee Clark or his committment to the club, LEE F'kin CLARK! One of our main coaches?? Bloody hell, would he get a role at Liverpool, Arsenal or such? Would he shite. Give him a role, let him progress and learn as he is, but yes we should have top coaches if we have aspirations of being a top side. OR is that too simple?

That's what I am moaning about for a long time. The professionalism of the setup. There is nothing wrong in having someone like Lee Clark in the coaching set up where he can learn his trade as it was last year. But giving him full responsibility for the reserve team and sack a fully qualified coach like Craig? That was another thing that made me angry on Saturday watching the highlights of the match. Next to 'arry the tw*t was sitting Tony Adams, a man who is slowly working his way up in the game.

Intertoto Cup ambitions ffs. Lofty stuff. From the top four of the Premiership to "Intertoto Cup ambitions". The ground we've lost is pretty much unrecoverable imo. The impact of Shepherd's calamitous decision-making as chairman is finally being seen. We are a mess.

Btw, am I right in thinking that Villa will be 5th best club in the premiership if they finish above us, which looks likely?

Have they qualified for Europe as much as us in the last 10 years though?

Before Pearson came in it was Roeder, Clark and Terry fucking Mac. Sunday morning stuff tbh.

Better watch what you say about Clark mate. I got slated over on N-O once for calling him and Terry Mac The Chuckle Brothers.

"Fair enough you can pass judgement on Mcdermott, but how can you call Clark a chuckle brother?

If thats the way people are going to treat an apprentice manager, learning his trade at the club that he loves, then its a wonder how anyone makes it here."

I feel so guilty now. Because of my posting on a internet forum it looks like I may have ruined Clarkys managerial career. Sorry lads...

I'd say Clark reckons that if he hangs round long enough and Shearer doesn't want the job he has a chance of getting it himself, and with Freddy in charge it's not beyond the realms of possibility.

For some reason, the only mental image I ever get of Clark now is when they interviewed him for local tele on top of the bus when we won the second division. He was swigging from a bottle of wine, could hardly focus, and slurred something like 'grrrreatestdayofmelifelike'
