Carroll wanted for promotion push at Foxes

Neil McDonald has offered to help his former Newcastle United captain Glenn Roeder by taking Andy Carroll on loan - and do Carlisle United's League One promotion hopes a favour in the process, writes Stuart Rayner.

Carroll has impressed in cameos for the Magpies first team this season, but Roeder is set to loan the 18-year-old out next season to gain more experience.

With the Cumbrians in desperate need of striking talent this summer, McDonald has pushed to the front of the queue for Carroll - or any other promising youngsters Roeder is willing to put his way.

"He (Carroll) has just signed a four-year contract which tells you we're never going to be able to buy him," argued McDonald. "But we have got a good relationship with Newcastle, and they have a lot of young players who have played for the first team this year but who might not have that chance next season, with certain players coming back from injury.

"That might give us half a chance to get a couple of them next season, and finishing eighth or ninth in League One this season hopefully gives us the chance to attract players of that calibre.

"We have to have that fine mixture of youth and experience which we had this season, and bringing in loan players can help us achieve that. We are looking all over the place for players."

Paul Huntington, David Edgar, Matty Pattison, James Troisi and Kazenga LuaLua have all taken advantage of a host of injuries at St James's Park this season to enjoy glimpses of first-team football.

"All that group of players, had we not had that injury crisis would all have been out on loan," Roeder told The Journal in March. "I'm a big believer of what we did at West Ham.

Rio (Ferdinand) went to Bournemouth, Frank (Lampard) went to Swansea, Michael Carrick went to Swindon and Birmingham for one game before being called back, (Jermain) Defoe went to Bournemouth and smashed the goal-scoring record down there (and) I sent Glen Johnson to Millwall for 14 games."

Meanwhile, Newcastle youngsters Kris Gate, Chris Shanks and Phil Cave had a trial game for Darlington yesterday.

Gate and Cave are out of contract this summer and, although Shanks has a further year, he is likely to follow them out of St James's.

The Quakers have announced they will play three games in China against Shenzhen Kingway between July 10-20.

I'd prefer to see him go to a championship club as this would be a better indicator as to whether or not he will be likely to make the step up. But I would think letting him go to Carlilse until January and seeing how it goes from there would be a good idea.
