IT'S 16 years since Newcastle United were last beaten in their final home game of the season, and Glenn Roeder intends to maintain that impressive finale form when Blackburn Rovers visit St.James' Park on Saturday.

The Magpies manager admits that, in a season decimated by injuries, things have not gone exactly how he had planned.

But Roeder says that his side have the chance to put on a performance against the Lancashire outfit and give the Toon Army something to cheer about as the curtain comes down on another Gallowgate campaign.

The 51-year-old told nufc.co.uk: "It's all about winning our last home game and giving our fans something to cheer about, we want to put on a performance and get the three points.

"But the boys need to win it for themselves as much as anyone else.

"Everyone in football knows what problems we've had this year with injuries, we had our 12th major operation of the year this week when Antoine Sibierski had surgery on his broken arm.

"I said to Nigel Pearson before the Reading game, thank god we have Shola and Michael back, and then we went and got two more injuries in Emre and Antoine.

"Injuries have prevented us from winning enough matches to get where we want to be, but we also know that the squad needs to be improved."

Roeder is hopeful that midfield pair Nicky Butt and Scott Parker will return from their respective ankle injuries, but confirmed that the game will come too soon for sidelined stopper Shay Given.

"It's still 50-50 on Scott and Nicky but they both trained on Thursday. The game will come a bit too soon for Shay and we'll have to wait and see for Watford."

I've been impressed with the way he has continually managed to avoid blaming the injuries and not making excuses all season like, have to give him that [/tongueincheek]
