Finished 'Glue' by Irvine Welsh recently. Quality. Up there with 'Trainspotting'.

Excellent book, read it on holiday last year. I've only got Porno left to read of his stuff but I jut never get round to it. Anyone know if it's worth it?

Was talking to Renton about it and he says it's canny but not as good as 'Trainspotting' (he hasn't read 'Glue'). The main characters from 'Trainspotting' are minor characters in 'Glue' and apparently some of the characters from 'Glue' pop up in 'Porno' too - which is the follow up to 'Trainspotting'. I think 'Porno' and 'Bedroom Secrets of the Master Chefs' are the only two I haven't read. If you like him and you haven't read 'Marabou Stork Nightmares' (which isn't that well known) you should as it's brilliant too.

Stork nightmares is fantastic as is Filfth. Glue was good, in fact I enjoy all his books, haven't read Trainspotting, any good?

Is that a piss-take? If not, you should and having seen the film doesn't take anything away from it as there's a lot more to the book.

I thought 'Filth' was good. Not one of his best though.

1984. Finished homage to catalonia recently and now I have a better insight into Orwell it will be interesting to see how that shaped his police state.

Sitting on my bookshelf still. I think in a strange sort of way because I read loads of Orwell when I was a lot younger I almost forget how brilliant his work is. Need to re-visit a few at some point.

Whacky man you've got to read trainspotting. Once you get over the phonetics and realise there is quite a complex array of characters it's superb. Renton, Begbie, Sickboy, Spud, Tommy, Second Prize, Matt, Ally, Kelly, Dianne, Gav............

Incidentally, I saw Filth as a play at the theatre Royal once. The strange thing was it was a monologue, one actor played over 100 parts iirc. It might sound crap but he utterly superb, I've never seen such a masterclass in stage acting before.

Not been reading much lately. Started Children of Men about a month ago but never went back after 3 chapters. I've got the Johnny Cash autobiography there to start, might just jump into that instead. I find apart from Sight and Sound magazine and the paper I'd always rather listen to music than read these days though.

I'm struggling through 'Metamorphosis and other stories' By Kafka at the minute. It's ok, just finding the style a bit staid (probably due to it being a translation). 'Metamorphosis' itself was good though. Going to read 'The Man in the High Castle' by Philip K Dick next I think.

Anyone seen those new versions of classics? They're called "xxxxx in half the time" and they've taken out all the fat and left just the bare bones of the plot so simple people can get through them.

Moby Dick and Anna Kareninininina(sp?) are the only ones I can remember.

Sort of defeats the point. If you're going to remove all the descriptive text why not go the whole hog and just add the ending to the synopsis and I can read it in a 50th of the time.

I agree, what's the point? 'Moby Dick' is one of my favourite books btw. I've not read any Tolstoy but the whole thing about novels like that are the complexity of the story and the different characters and so on shirley.

I've seen the film and thought it was spot on if your not on a come down yourself whilst watching. I was just wondering whether it was worth reading the book as the films not a patch etc, like pappillion, the film is wank but the book ranks up amongst the best I've ever read.

You can get it for next to nowt 2nd hand on Amazon btw. Always loads of copies of stuff like that. If you like Irvine Welsh, you’ve got to read it. ‘Papillon’ is another one sitting on my bookshelf (along with about 20 others) waiting to be read.

Am just finishing Nature Girl by Carl Hiaasen. I'd recommend all of his books, they are all set in Florida and are crime/comedy/thrillers.

His best is Stormy Weather imo and one of his novels was turned into a terrible film (Strip tease) but dont let that put you off. The book is actually very funny.

He also writes for the Miami Herald.
