Newcastle will play a system that suits the England number 10. He will play alongside Alan Shearer and it might be old-fashioned to play with two up top, but I like it. Owen can feed off Shearer's headers and all the little bits and pieces that he picks up and they should be a match-winning combination. They have also bought in Luque, who looks like a natural left-sided attacker, and have Scott Parker and Emre in the middle of the park. Now that they have signed Nolberto Solano too, they have a whole midfield quartet that didn't exist last season. Personally I think that Scott Parker was one of the best signings of the summer. I am amazed that Chelsea let him go and I know some of the Chelsea players feel the same way. Parker could have been the natural successor to Claude Makelele and he wouldn't have cost them a penny. We have already seen from his early season performances at Newcastle how good he is. Emre is a natural talent. It is just a question of whether he settles in, because not all Turks have settled in to the Premiership. But Souness knows him well and if he can fit in as well as his compatriot Tugay at Blackburn then they are onto a winner. Luque is a bit of a gamble, as all big-money buys are, but he has the pedigree and talent to succeed in the Premiership. So there are certainly the players there to get Newcastle's season back on track and I think both Graeme Souness - who has had to deal with a fair bit of flak - and Freddie Shepherd should be complimented for their work in the transfer market. However the main problem that Newcastle have had in the last few years is that they get punished for too many individual errors. Against Manchester United, they defended well for an hour then Boumsong made two errors that cost them the match. That has happened too often for Newcastle, but Bramble will be back soon and they have brought in Craig Moore, who played under Souness at Rangers. One player I have been impressed with is Steven Taylor, who is yet to make a mistake. However, like Philip Senderos at Arsenal, he is a 19-year-old kid coming through. He will have good spells but he might find it tough to impress throughout the season. With all the newcomers arriving at St James' Park, Jermaine Jenas has been the man to make way. But I think £7million is good money for a midfielder who is yet to fulfil his potential. In all Souness has plenty to choose from, and I think the squad looks better than it did last season. But it is never easy when you bring in lots of players and the problem Souness faces is making all the new faces gel. I don't think it will be long before they are playing in the top ten not the bottom ten, though. One of the few pundits who always gets behind us 100% Top man! Then again Bramble imporved greatly last year adn became a pretty solid defender. I know Taylor's played right-back before, but he isn't really a natural full-back is he? Solano's arrival may give Dyer a kick up the arse, knowing that he can't just come off the treatment table and automatically walk back into the first team. That midfield and strikeforce would give us many options, pace from Owen and Luque, power from Shearer and Parker, creativity from Emre and Nobby, and Solano's crosses for Shearer. We'd also have left and right-footed dead ball specialists, and we'd have Dyer to bring off the bench to run tired at tired defences. All sounds great in theory, but the biggest task will be keeping everybody fit. At least we know Nobby isn't injury prone.
