A NEW look for that old favourite Brown Ale was unveiled today.

The famous bottled beer celebrated its 80th birthday in April and bosses called on Chronicle readers help mark the occasion by designing a new look label.

Scores of you entered and our exclusive pictures show what brewery chiefs have chosen to feature on bottles from the end of the month.

The current label shows the silhouette of the Tyne Bridge inside the blue star.

But for the first time in the brand’s long history, the bridge will be joined by an image of the Millennium Bridge.

Doug Cook, Newcastle Brown Ale brand manager said: “The new label celebrates the history and modernity of a unique beer that was created in Newcastle in 1927 to satisfy the hard-earned thirst of local miners and shipbuilders.

“It has gone on to garner universal acclaim and strong sales in more than 40 countries around the world.”

For many years Brown Ale was referred to as dog, supposedly because husbands were said used to use the excuse of taking the dog for a walk when they wanted to sneak off to the pub.

Scottish and Newcastle spokesman David Jones said: “As you can see, the new label remains true to tradition and retains the iconic Tyne Bridge that has featured on the label for most of the brand’s 80- year history.

“We’d like to thank your readers for the interest they have shown.

“They can share their thoughts on the new design by e-mailing us at: newcastlebrown80@s-n.com”

Bosses picked out five entries that particularly stood out.

Paula Stott of Cragston Avenue, Blakelaw suggested a celebration of Brown Ale’s success abroad with a stars and stripes label featuring the Statue of Liberty along with the Tyne Bridge.

C Jobling of Coast Road in Cochrane Park suggested a label featuring Brown Ale founder Col Jim Porter.

Claire Rice of Church Street in Dunston put forward a great drawing of a dog representing Brown Ale’s famous nickname.

DB Ridley of Valley Drive in Low Fell put forward a long list of suggestions including two drawings and special birthday poem.

And finally Lesley Ann Evans of Harewood Green in Harlow Green suggested featuring Sting using some reworked song lyrics to provide an 80th birthday message in a bottle.

All will get a crate of the anniversary Brown Ale.

Perhaps they should have renamed it 'Tyneside Brown Ale'?? The whole point of the silhouette of the bridge being off to one side was that it was Newcastle and not Gateshead - now it looks like we're getting both sides of the river being displayed.

Or is this a result of them moving production over to Dunston??
