Toon handed Young deal boost Thu, Jul 12 2007 10:47

Charlton boss Alan Pardew has admitted defeat in his battle to keep England defender Luke Young and Newcastle could now swoop.

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill has already made enquiries about signing the Addicks right-back but faces competition from the Magpies and Middlesbrough for his signature.

Young is considering his future at the Valley after Charlton's relegation to the Championship last season and Pardew has now revealed he expects him to move on before next month - although he is holding out for a fee around £4.5 million for the 28-year-old former Tottenham star.

Pardew said: "I appreciate that at this stage of his career he wants to play in the Premier League.

"He's a difficult price because of his age and because he's an England player but I'm sure one or two clubs will come and he'll be interested."

Is he really that old now?

There's a career that seems to have just been going nowhere for quite a while now.
