"We did all we could to keep him at the club by offering him a fantastic new deal, but ultimately he had made his mind up about leaving and we only want players who want to play for the team." etc etc True, but what else was/is the club supposed to do. Players in last year of contracts hold ALL the cards. All this "wait until we're safe" stuff is bollocks. It's purely a stalling tactic, if the player is truly concerned about being relegated, all they have to say is "put a release clause/price in my deal". Have just read this on the Chronicle web site and the word fantastic is in speech marks and the article goes on to quote the direct quote from Pardew containing the words fantastic............Conspiracytastic or what. “He will be offered a fantastic contract here, he knows that, but still it is going to be down to his decision. I dont think going to another club would make you any more noticeable.
