Newcastle new-boy Alan Smith has saluted the Magpies faithful for their response to his debut performance in a pre-season friendly with Sampdoria.

The former Manchester United striker bagged the only goal of the game, and the England international says his first performance and goal for his new side was capped off by the superb reception he received.

Smith's debut came days after his £6 million switch to St. James' Park, and the 26-year-old is targeting a successful start to the season.

Fantastic support

"I thank the fans for the reception they gave me, it was incredible," he told the club's official website.

"This is a massive club with fantastic support and I'm delighted to be here.

"I couldn't wait for the game and it was great to get 90 minutes under my belt.

"I was trying to time my runs to get on the end of things and thankfully I managed to score.

"I just can't wait for Bolton now and it's important we get a good start to the season."
