SAM Allardyce barely put a foot wrong at Bolton and with an improved budget, great things beckon for him at St James'.

The man who revived Kevin Davies' career has taken on a similar project in Alan Smith, and a strikeforce which also includes Michael Owen, Oba Martins, Mark Viduka and Shola Ameobi looks among the league's strongest.

Defence, however, remains a problem that not even the departure of Titus Bramble will cure and there is more work needed from Allardyce in midfield, to bring the best out of Joey Barton, Nicky Butt and last season's big disappointment, Damien Duff.

Title odds: 250-1. Relegation odds: 33-1

INS AND OUTS

INS: M Viduka (Middlesbrough, free), J Barton (Manchester City, £5.8m), D Rozehnal (Paris St Germain, £2.9m), Geremi (Chelsea, free), A Smith (Manchester United, £6m)

OUTS: S Parker (West Ham, £7m), A O'Brien (Hibernian, tribunal), T Bramble (Wigan, free), A Sibierski (Wigan, free), O Onyewu (Standard Liege, end of loan), C Moore, O Bernard, P Srnicek, K Gate (all released)

STATS DOM SAYS

Strength: If they can keep Owen and Martins fit they should have a potent strikeforce. Martins averaged a goal every three games last season. Owen has only played 14 Premier League games for the club, but he's scored three goals in that time.

Weakness: Failure to capitalise on St James' Park's intimidating atmosphere. Newcastle have not scored a league goal at home since February 10.

LAWRO SAYS..

Top six. Sam Allardyce will make them much more difficult to beat and the signing of Alan Smith to play alongside Michael Owen will be fantastic for them. He is a real worker and with a good run of games you just know he will score goals.

MANAGER: A Big Sam did well with Bolton but will find the expectations at Newcastle far higher

DEFENCE: C+ Long the butt of jokes, Bramble won't be missed, Rozehnal brings experience, but more needed

MIDFIELD: B+ Barton and Geremi will add drive and Big Sam will be looking to Butt and Duff

ATTACK: A Viduka and Owen could be exciting and Martins can produce some explosive performances

OVERALL: B+ It could be a bright new dawn on Tyneside - but fans have been let down in the past

He'll probably forget when it comes to the predictions though

Newcastle v Wigan

I think an away win is on the cards here, expect to see Henri Camara back amongst the goals with Newcastle's leaky defence.

Lawro's Verdict: 1-2
