SATURDAY sees Newcastle United's first home Premier League game of the 2007/08 season - and we want YOU to help raise the roof for Big Sam and the boys.

After beginning the campaign with a 3-1 win over Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium, the Magpies will be looking to maintain winning ways when Martin O'Neill's men arrive at St. James' Park.

To help make home advantage count, we want the stadium to be a sea of black and white on Saturday.

The club have arranged for 4,000 black and white streamers to be placed in the East Stand tomorrow. Fans will be asked to throw these when United take to the pitch just before kick off to create a spectacular black and white impact that will help inspire the players.

Fans are also reminded to take note of the new traffic arrangements around St. James's and also to remember that Saturday is the first game when the new season ticket smart cards are in operation.

So the advice is clear - give yourself plenty of time to get to your seat before kick-off. And don't forget that if you are in the ground early then there are great discount food and drink offers available on the concourse.

Half-time on Saturday will also see United pay tribute to supporter Mark Allison who has recently completed the gruelling 874-mile run from John O'Groats to Lands End for charity.

To celebrate his amazing achievement and fundraising efforts, Mark will run a lap of honour around the St. James' track at half-time.

Jesus wept. And I sincerely mean that.

:)

Just missing the party hats and kazoos!

PS the competition is to spot Alex's girly throw. I reckon it'll be fucking blatant even with 3,999 other streamers for cover.

It's also better than most of what gets played before the match. Although obviously the resurrection of "United, United, United we stand, United we never shall fall", mid-90s-style, would trump even an Abbott/Whigfield/Black Lace megamix.

Don't be dissing Whigfield, Martin. You're on thin ice there. Very thin ice.

Taylor made for fanfare!

Aug 17 2007

by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle

STEVEN TAYLOR is hoping the Toon Army will be Newcastle’s 12th man in their opening home clash with Aston Villa tomorrow.

This week the Chronicle has been backing the Toon Ultras’ campaign to Bring Back the Noise – and Taylor gave their bid to regenerate the atmosphere a big thumbs-up when he underlined the importance of the Geordie nation.

United, of course, will be aiming to keep up their 100% record and perhaps emulate the days from the Kevin Keegan era, when Newcastle made a habit of starting the season like a house on fire.

Back then Taylor was a ball boy at St James’ Park as one of the club’s associated schoolboys.

These days, he is one of Sam Allardyce’s main men and will be looking to help his manager continue his great start as boss.

He said: “Our fans at Bolton were fantastic and hopefully it can continue against Villa tomorrow night.

“I threw my shirt into the crowd at the end because they were so good at Bolton and really helped us.

“It was a token of appreciation because they got behind us so well.”

Taylor looked rock solid alongside David Rozenhal at the Reebok, but he knows he cannot rest too easy in the Magpies’ starting XI with Cacapa now knocking on the door of Big Sam’s office after coming through a reserve game in midweek and looking to continue his glittering career on Tyneside after winning medals galore as skipper of Lyon.

Taylor admitted it was the same situation for each and every player who performed so well at Bolton.

He said: “We go into the Villa match on a high, but we are not getting carried away with ourselves.

“Over the last few years we have been slow starters, but this is the first time for a while we have started well.

“We have had a week to recover from the Bolton game.

“We set about Wanderers very well and won most of our second balls.

“We will be looking to do that again when Villa come up here.”

Newcastle’s new-found confidence showed throughout the side at Bolton after the two players who went AWOL at Watford on the final day of last term – Oba Martins and Charles N’Zogbia – both netted in the Premiership opener to rubber-stamp the unity in the Toon camp.

Speaking on two-goal star Oba Martins, Taylor added: “Oba has proved he wants to play for the club.

“What better way to show that than with two goals in the first game?

“He has been playing out wide but I still thought he did a fantastic job, worked well for the team and scored his goals.

“That is what we need, we need to work hard for each other.

“If you have people working hard and putting their head on the line for each other, you have a great chance.

“The work-rate against Bolton was second to none and that is what we are going to need.

“We even had players on the bench who were desperate to get on the field, so it bodes well for the season.”

However, despite such a positive start to the season, Taylor revealed there is nothing wrong with trying to find complete perfection after Nicolas Anelka dented hopes of a clean sheet.

He added: “You cannot stop concentrating no matter what the score is.

“The only disappointment was Nicolas Anelka scoring because we have worked well defending set-pieces and they broke away and scored.

“We already have something to improve on.

“We want to eradicate stupid mistakes like that.”
