SAM Allardyce will hand full debuts to Cacapa and Jose Enrique as well as first starts of the season to Michael Owen and Shola Ameobi for Wednesday's Carling Cup clash with Barnsley.

Enrique has yet to feature since his switch from Villarreal this summer, while Cacapa has made two appearances from the substitutes' bench.

Owen and Ameobi both picked up slight knocks during pre-season and are only just returning to full fitness, while Turkish star Emre is another player who could get his first outing of the campaign after recovering from the ankle injury he picked up towards the end of last season.

And Big Sam has confirmed that he is set to ring the changes as the Magpies kick-off their quest for cup silverware against the Tykes.

"Apart from the injuries to Stephen Carr and Peter Ramage we had a few other knocks from our trip to Middlesbrough which we will have to look at during the next couple of days," said the Toon gaffer.

"But I am looking to play Michael Owen and Shola Ameobi up front, and Emre is back in training so he could come into it as well.

"Cacapa is now ready but he cannot really play at right-back, so he will go in as a central defender."

And the United boss is fully aware that this competition could represent the Geordies' best chance of bringing to an end the Magpies' 38-year wait for a trophy.

"We will be picking a team which we feel will be capable of winning our Carling Cup tie, but it is very important our players are up to that capability," he added.

"The Carling Cup is a bit low-key at this stage of the season but we are still looking on it as a very important competition.

"I always feel the first hurdle can be the most difficult because it's the opposing team's cup final and we will go out and try to be very positive on Wednesdsay night."

We should win, hope Owen and Shola get off the mark and that Jose and Cacapa play all right.

I'd hope so, just be nice to see more consistency if we're hoping to get a decent position this season.
