Talksport had a British Hernia specialist on earlier, he said using his modern techniques, that even following surgery for a double hernia the patient could be exercising within 45mins of the op, jogging the same day and back playing football within 2 weeks.

People keep mentioning this German woman who operated on Shearer... was that during the 96/97 season?? And his layoff after the 5-0 game?

Nah, I think it's the op he had in his last season (or was it his second to last) It was around November or December I think.

Good to hear that it's getting done ASAP. Espeically since we're going to be without Martins for the January (and maybe after) becasue of the African Cup of Nations.

No, it was his last season or the season before that and he was back playing in about 2-3 weeks.

Under Souness perhaps when Carr was out too?

Newcastle's Alan Shearer was back at the training ground on Wednesday, just 24 hours after having hernia surgery.

The 35-year-old travelled to Germany for the operation and hopes to be fit to face Chelsea on 19 November.

He will start light training and expects to be running within days, following the example of Stephen Carr, who had a similar injury.

Carr had an operation last Thursday, was running within 48 hours and will quickly return to full training.

Newcastle manager Graeme Souness said: "There's a lady who operates and she must do something different because she gets them back very quickly."

Souness's side have won their last three Premiership games after a disappointing start to the season.
