not before time - the real cost of motoring has been falling for too long

The real tricky is taxing cars to the point of collapse, but not quite doing so, as it would effectively destroy the British economy.

If any Government were genuinely serious about road issues, freight would have been forcible moved back onto the rail systems decades ago.

Our passenger service is <_< and stupidly expensive on top of that, for sure.

But freight-wise we're not too bad, just companies have never really been genuinely encouraged to move off the road since they were first encouraged to move onto it with the glut of cheap ex-military lorries post WW1.

And there's no point hammering and hammering cars when people often work a fair distance from where they live but have no viable public transport system (all that does is increase the tax burden but provide no other real result), yet more or less ignoring all the stuff that is moved by lorry that could be moved in other ways.

If they are that bothered tax breaks on stuff like the smart car should also be considered (again a good idea, but priced far too high to ever really be popular).
