External Hard Drives

My Mac Mini is getting pretty full due to my ever increasing music collection (cough, cough) so I'm thinking of investing in this:

*BRAND NEW* USB External Portable 500GB Hard Drive UK £70.00

http://www.envizage.com/ebay/Graphics/35enc2.jpg

Anyone recommend anything better for that kind of money?

In the very near future the mac mini will be replaced with a G5 and I'm thinking of moving my Mac Mini into the living room with a small monitor (ideas) and my Harmon Kardon soundsticks and basically just using it purely as a jukebox and for the odd bit of browsing. Anyone got any (better) alternative solutions i.e. fancy new speakers and music/video storage shit that would hook up to my TV/Amp etc.

I'm open to suggestions, not bothered about a budget as I'm getting the G5 from work for nowt so I've got the money i would have spent upgrading for fancy, sexy gadgets

TIA

Can see Laz rubbing his hands,

I'm a bit of a a luddite so basically I didnt have a clue about any of what you've just posted, but I defy anyone to read that bit without going into a Gary Glitter, 'Leader of the Gang' vocal.

I got a Maxtor 750Gb external HD from PC World (probably could have got it cheaper online tbh) for about £90 I think.

Have you seen owt of these media type ones Pud? It would save me burning a load of things to disk to watch in the living room and I'd also be able to stick my entire MP3 collection on it and it play it through my surround system

Well sounds like a good idea but....

What kind of tv do you have wacky? is it a shiny new lcd or plasma? does it have a usb socket on it? if so - you might be able to connect a regular external hard drive with your stuff on it.

Would you actually use it to encode stuff? by that i mean, are you gonna download stuff from the net thats already encoded to .avi or are you gonna record stuff from the tv (like a sky+ box) and then encode it to .avi? if your not - bit of a waste tbh.

£90 for a 750GB external hard drive is good value for money - it will take a while to fill that.

Then get something like this http://www.ebuyer.com/product/104108

Divx means it can play .avi files.

USB means you can connect a usb device (such as a hard drive)

Upscaler means it will 'upscale' the standard definition signal to the 'high-def' resolution. (it wouldnt mean your sd is suddennly hi-def but it will give a sharper picture).

It's discontinued and the others don't have usb on them.

Cheers anyway

I hunted all over for the right one, was originally going to get a streamer so I could stream my porn musicals to the living room but nowhere seemed to know anything about them, the likes of Richer Sounds etc were totally lost when you mentioned them and they were all around the £200 mark so I decided to go for a full whack media PC and I love it. Got an Acer Aspire L3200, it looks fine under the telly, has a 320Gb HD, built in TV tuner and the ability to do 7.1 surround sound (although I still havent got that sorted properly).acer-aspire-l320_1.jpg

Ive added the Maxtor to that so its a) got over a Tb of space and  works as a server for the other computers in the home. Now as you said, all my music is on there along with a load of films, it works like a Sky+ box but on the built in Freeview tuner I can pause live telly, series record etc plus theres a load of additional links through Media Centre to other stuff as well.

On top of all that I can sit in the sitting room surfing with the telly on screen as well.

Be careful though if you go out looking, theres about 3 or 4 different specs of the L320 on sale, some have 160Gb, 250Gb and 350Gb HDs, some dont have TV cards built in etc.
