Newcastle's non-internationals are playing Rangers this afternoon in a behind-closed-doors friendly at St. James' Park.

The Rangers' official site reported:

Rangers will take on Newcastle United in a closed door friendly to give match action to the fringe stars.

Ally McCoist and Kenny McDowall are utilising the international break to get some game time for players who have not been able to get regular first team football recently.

Thomas Buffel and Ugo Ehiogu will play against the Magpies to maintain their momentum after returning from long-term injuries.

Charlie Adam, Amdy Faye, Alan Gow, Kirk Broadfoot and Chris Burke will also play in the match and the squad will be fleshed out with some of the younger reserve players like Dean Furman, Jordan McMillan and Paul Emslie.

McDowall said: "It's a good opportunity for us to give match action to the lads who have been on the fringe recently.

"It will be a good game because Newcastle are using the game for the same purpose and, of course, the facilities at St James's Park are superb."

Meanwhile, boss Walter Smith is hoping that all of his international stars will return unscathed as they attempt to bounce back from Saturday's Hibs defeat.

He said: "We have a number of players away on international duty and we hope that they will all return unscathed and ready for the game against Celtic.

"We have to hope that the Hibs defeat was just a set back. You are going to suffer them over the course of a season but it's never good when you get one.

"You don't just form a team and walk onto a pitch and win a game. There are aspects we have to look at before you get everything settled down."

News of this when we get it.

RANGERS' fringe stars enhanced their chances of forcing their way into Walter Smith's top team plans when they defeated Newcastle United today 3-1 at St James's Park.

Many of the lads who have been on the outside in recent weeks really put in good performances in the match which was played behind closed doors.

Young striker Rory Loy, Chris Burke and Alan Gow got the goals in a comfortable win for the Ibrox men against a strong Magpies side which included Joey Barton.

Centre back Ugo Ehiogu was outstanding in defence for Rangers and he clearly wanted to show that he is bursting to get back into the real thing.

Coach Ian Durrant said: "It was a good workout for the boys in many ways and we had a lot of good performances.

"Big Ugo was exceptional at the back, but we also had really good performances from Alan Gow, Chris Burke and Charlie Adam which is obviously good news too.

"We were obviously happy to win the game against a strong Newcastle side but it was more important to keep the lads ticking over."

3-1 off a fuckin pub team? Was Terry Mac playing? Seriously I hope Pattison was the most experienced person on there because that's like losing 3-1 at home to Preston, you know exactly what the Rangers fans will be saying now.

Sounded like a Newcastle IX rather than a strong Newcastle side.

Who cares if it has improved Barton's fittness level. ;) Another game next week for him and hopefully he will come back against Spurs.

Stevie, which site is that from?

Are you a member on there?

No I don't have an SPL team, strictly a Tartan Army man...

Sign up for FollowFollow full of it they are.

I used to have a soft spot for Celtic Radgina, used to, still prefer them to Rangers though, I just go on there for a laugh at how deluded they are. They view themselves as one of the top 5 clubs in the world, Rangers that is.

There's no way he wrote it out that way unless he was taking the piss. I'm a Celtic man myself as far as the SPL goes but even Rangers fans can't be deluded enough to think sky money could make Ronaldinho desperate to come to Ibrox.

He's pretty excited about beating our B team 3-1, the knob.
