The Genius of Photography

Flicked past the repeat late last night on my way to Scrubs. Didn't sound like my kind of thing. Mind you, I watched and enjoyed that series on motorways, so I'm not sure my opinion's worth anything much.

It was fascinating and I think it'll only get better once it gets into the growth of journalistic photography etc. What I liked about those early days was that the attempts to be 'artistic' and to align photography with the high arts, such as painting, seem very staid when you look at them now. By contrast the amateur photography that exploded once it became affordable for the masses produced some 'accidental masterpieces' which still look fantastic.

It's repeated on BBC Four on Monday (at 12:30am and 3:30am) if that's any good to you, or anyone else for that matter.

Might check it out after all the waxing lyrical on here.

Another thing - There was a bloke who was researching the hiostory of New York and he was interested in how, in particular, poor, working class people lived in years gone by. As part of his research he looked at photos of crime scenes taken by the NYPD. It turned out all the photos were taken by 6 or 7 policemen with no prior photographic experience but some of the results were just stunning.
