Baba’s injured – again

Nov 10 2007 by Alan Oliver, Evening Chronicle

CELESTINE BABAYARO has broken down yet again – leaving Sam Allardyce more than a trifle frustrated.

And it’s no wonder, as it’s nearly eight months since the Nigerian international last kicked a ball for Newcastle following a series of injuries.

Allardyce has yet to even see him in a black-and-white shirt.

Big Sam thought that was all going to change when Babayaro was named in the reserve squad for this week’s game with Everton, only for the former Chelsea left-back to pull out yet again because of a back problem.

One of the reasons Freddy Shepherd went for Allardyce as manager was the way he managed to steer Bolton Wanderers free of injuries in his time at the Reebok Stadium.

But Babayaro is not helping his manager’s cause, and he has just 45 Premier League games under his belt since arriving at St James’s Park on a free transfer in the January transfer window of 2005.

However, Big Sam remained diplomatic when I asked him about Babayaro.

The United boss broke off his preparations for today’s derby match with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light to tell me: “Babayaro had a bit of a back problem which doesn’t relate to the other injury.

“But it’s obviously disappointing from his and our point of view.”

United fans will not be exactly excited about any talk of Babayaro, or indeed Stephen Carr – who not so long ago were the club’s first-choice full-back pairing – returning.

But to be fair to Babayaro, when United have actually managed to get him on to the field he has done OK.

And he will be needed when the likes of Geremi, Abdoulaye Faye, Habib Beye and Oba Martins head off to the African Cup of Nations at the turn of the year.

Meanwhile, Allardyce hopes to have Shay Given, Carr and Damien Duff all back in action by the end of the month.

Given is out with a groin problem and could return for the visit of Liverpool on November 24, along with long-term victims Duff (ankle) and Carr (hamstring).

But Peter Ramage is not expected back until nearer the end of the season after tearing 70% of his cruciate ligament at Middlesbrough in August.
