McClaren told of England sacking

Steve McClaren has been told in private by the Football Association that he has been sacked as England coach.

The FA will imminently announce that McClaren, who is set for pay-off of up to £2.5m, has lost his job 18 months into a four-year contract.

The FA has been holding an emergency board meeting since 0830 GMT at its Soho headquarters in London.

The decision comes after England's 3-2 defeat by Croatia and failure to qualify for Euro 2008.

Former Middlesbrough boss McClaren, 46, admitted before the Croatia match that he would "take responsibility" if England failed to reach the European Championship finals in Austria and Switzerland.

The FA took action to dismiss McClaren ahead of the 2010 World Cup qualifying draw in Durban, South Africa, on Sunday.

England's failure to reach a major tournament for the first time since the 1994 World Cup finals will cost the FA at least £8m in lost revenues.

The FA has plenty of time to search for a replacement with the next scheduled fixture a friendly in France at the end of March.

Had a quick check and apparently the severance clause meant that he got a year's salary if he was sacked - which is the £2.5m. Still not bad like but it could have been a lot worse as he was contracted until 2010. I think Sven was on about £5m a year. Which probably represented better value tbh :crylaughin:

The FA should be sacked for giving Mclaren that contract in the first place (instead of one like Nigel Wothingthon's which expired at the end of the qualification), appointing him in the first place and wasting a fortune on Wembley maening ridiculous decisions like having to try and get income by American Football games and thereby ruining the pitch.

Hopefully they might now appoint Allardyce and Newcastle will get Mourinhio!

I think it's fucking shocking that he get's a £2.5million pay-off for getting sacked.

FFS, what muppet draws up these contracts. Surely you'd just put a clause in that states if England fail to reach the Euros then the contract is terminated with no pay off?

Wish I could get a years salary for being incompetent! :crylaughin:

England just need a manager that can A. actually get a squad of players playing as a team, and B. don't produce their selections by listening outside the window of their local.

Although it has to be said the lack of English quality really becomes apparent with a few key injuries.

why, in gods name is Shearer more likely to get the England Job than established Managers like Allardyce and Redknapp?

Now I'm not saying either of those two should get the job, but surely they... with their experience and respect... should get it ahead of a bloke who's sole experience is helping Roeder get an average team to limp into european places?
