I've said in another thread that the timing of this sacking is the worst possible. Good managers just don't leave their clubs in the middle of a season, especially in the middle of making signings for their clubs. Redknapp made the point that he's already pursuaded players to join his club, so he couldn't leave Portsmouth.

 

Whilst we're without a manager, who exactly is identifying players, talking to them pursuading them to come to the club (a massive task now without throwing stupid wages at them). Top class players will not come to the club whilst they don't know who the manager is.

 

So not only are we writing this season off, we're doing it with the shower of shit players which are already here. Players like Smith, Emre, Barton and Geremi are the best we can hope for in central midfield for the rest of the season.

 

I was of the thinking that although Sam wasn't working out, a few players coming in in January would make sure that we can consolidate a mid-table position. With the team though (1 point out of 6 against Derby, loss to Wigan, drew with Sunderland) and without a manager, I can see us getting dragged into the bottom 5 or 6.

 

So why the hell did we sack a manager at such an important time in the season. Can anyone think of an example where a club sacked a manager at the start of January and came out of it better in the short term?

I guess they thought they could get someone straight in - and in that context it would have been better not to allow Allardyce to spend, but the new person instead.

 

Although as it's worked out realistically any manager we did manage to appoint before the window is going to be held to ransom like never before.

 

 

 

 

The tricky bit is if we don't appoint anyone at all (in the near future), this "team" doesn't function well as it is (and desperated needs some buys to patch it up), without a manager at all maybe we could be flirting with disaster.

I reckon if we'd had a positive approach like the first half against Man Utd. (and Man City at home) then we'd have beaten teams like Derby, Wigan and Reading already this season or at least have won a couple of those and drawn the other two. A similar approach is needed from now on. You're right about the lack of creativity (hence part of the reason for being outclassed versus City and MU) but we've made things worse with our negative tactics.

Yeah i hadnt thought about that. Smith, Barton, Geremi and Butt are doing a good job of making me not enjoy watching football at st james for probably the first time ever. Even when we were shit we had Shearers work rate and danger in front of goal to give us a glimmer of hope. The thought of going another 20 games with this squad is just depressing!
