Mr. Chelsea wins the Champions League for the club he loves against the club he loved as a kid. Should've been left to someone more competant. I actually wrote "he's neck and neck for best of a generation" but deleted it. I think they're neck and neck for honours now. Given that Messi has 2 years on him you're probably right. Was nearly praying for Terry to score the penalty so Ronaldo's dirty, disgusting cheating stutter-step penalty miss could cost them the final. Wonder what that the gum-chewing bastard would've had to say about that. That said, what was Terry doing taking the 5th penalty? Maybe this is the "tactical ineptitude" we keep hearing about. But the event was marred by violence both in Russia and at home. In West London, police in riot gear clashed with scores of Chelsea fans near the club's Stamford Bridge ground. One witness claimed the trouble started after an unmarked police car collided with a fan as it tried to make its was through a crowd of drunken supporters near Fulham Broadway underground station. "Suddenly about 50 of them just attacked the police car, they were trying to rip the lights off and get inside," the witness said. "It was terrifying. Then it all kicked off into a riot. "There were about 800 Chelsea fans and only about 50 police. "I saw them firing tear gas into the crowd, then the police charged at them with batons." Gangs of thugs, including a several young women, hurled glasses, bottles and even metal dustbins in ugly scenes around Fulham Broadway Station. Several officers were seen retreating with blood pouring from their faces after receiving blows, and at least a dozen Chelsea supporters, both male and female, were being treated by paramedics on the pavement. Paramedics and police tend to an injured man during the violent west London clashes There were also reports of isolated post-match clashes between Chelsea and Manchester United fans in Moscow. Police said there had been skirmishes involving supporters and local Russian youths, but heavy rain helped to keep trouble to a minimum. Earlier, United had clinched victory in a nail-biting penalty shootout after the match finished 1-1 at full time. The game kept 40,000 travelling British fans on the edges of their seats in the Russian capital. And the tension was equally felt by millions more watching in bars and living rooms back home. Fans were held captivated as the game first swung one way, then the other, before moving on to the stress of extra time and then penalties. Thousands of United fans had flocked near to the club's Old Trafford stadium to watch the match. The massive MEN Arena was also full as fans cheered on their team, motivated by the 50th anniversary of the Munich air disaster that claimed the lives of eight players while travelling during a European cup fixture. There was little between the sides in an ill-tempered game that saw Chelsea striker Didier Drogba sent off for raising a hand to an opponent's face. England captain John Terry cried on Chelsea manager Avram Grant's shoulder after a penalty miss by him and another by Nicolas Anelka handed victory to the Reds. Terry's miss provoked a dramatic response from Chelsea's Russian owner, Roman Abramovich. The billionaire fell back in his seat, clutching his chest and gasping in disbelief. His reaction was echoed by many other fans. But, after spending more than £700million and getting the club to the final in his hometown, Abramovich had more right than most to feel heartily sick. There were reports of trouble between Chelsea and Man Utd fans at sports bars at four locations in Moscow - Mokhovaya,. Tverskaya, Mayakovskaya Square and Sadovo-Triumfalnaya. Heavy rain in Moscow prevented major trouble before and after the game but there were isolated incidents. Before kick-off there was an incident on Novy Arbat, a main street close to the Kremlin, when 15 Russian teenagers clashed with around 50 English fans in a pub. Russian reports said that beer glasses were thrown at the Moscow teens. Several English fans reported concussion, broken teeth, and head injuries in the clash. A fan was beaten up at Nikolskaya street after the game, and another supporter had his passport stolen. A 28 year old Chelsea fan was diagnosed with asphyxia, claiming Man Utd fans had tried to strangle him with a Chelsea scarf. A drunk Chelsea fan was removed from the ground after he started vomiting during the penalty shoot-out, the Russian media reported. Thousands of Chelsea fans were bussed under police escort to their airports soon after their team lost on penalties. Police said they had used mobile "sobering vans" to treat drunk fans before the game. "This has been a successful operation. We are pleased at the lack of trouble. Most fans have seen a great game and are going back to Britain safe, if wet," said a police commander at the stadium. One blacklisted hooligan evaded checks and reached the Luzhniki stadium, only to be intercepted by Russian police on intelligence from British officers operating in Moscow. I thought the game was canny and better than I expected but it wasn't anywhere near as good as the media made it out to be. Fucking great that Terry missed the penalty that would have won it though.
