Commuter mistakenly arrested by armed police was 'shocked and scared'

An innocent commuter who was detained by police at gunpoint in a shocking case of mistaken identity has described how he "stepped off the train and into a really bad dream".

Nzube Udezue, a 21-year-old recent graduate from Oxford University, was ordered to the ground, handcuffed and arrested by a team of armed police officers at Bournemouth station on Saturday, in front of dozens of fellow travellers.

A spokesman for Dorset police insisted last night that the man they had mistakenly detained had nothing more to say on the matter.

But writing on his blog, Udezue, a computer science student known to friends by his rap name, Zuby, painted a very different picture.

Udezue said officers explained that – as a black man wearing a black T-shirt with orange writing - he matched the description of a man involved in a suspected firearms incident, which took place in another part of the country, earlier in the day.

"When I woke up this Saturday morning, I could happily say that I'd managed to get through (almost) 22 years of my life without any real incident with the police. I could also say that I'd never had a gun pointed at me," he said.

"Little did I know that by 6.10pm. I'd be lying face down on the ground, handcuffed, with several submachine guns pointed at me and the entire county's specialist police firearms unit on me."

The former student, whose social networking page was today filled with messages of support, said the ordeal had left him feeling "shocked, confused, scared and embarrassed all at the same time".

A dramatic image of the moment he was ordered to the ground was released yesterday, prompting comparisons with the case of Jean Charles de Menezes, the Brazilian man mistakenly shot dead by police after the failed July 21 bomb attacks. But Udezue's identity had previously not been known."

I think in the aftermath the police have acted courteously. But when reading these things and with the shooting of the Brazilian electrician I can' help but wonder how amateurish these highly armed police are and what if this geezer had panicked, confused and dazed as he was in the first 30 seconds.

The melodramatic cunt should stop moaning, he's not dead is he? Better safe than sorry.

I suppose not being shot is the litmus test these days, how sad.

He matched the description of an armed criminal, it would have been a disgrace if he hadn't been stopped.

Next time you come to Newcastle I'll gladly meet you for an amicable pint and if you can judge for yourself if I'm that much of a sad cunt to do something as pathetic as that. You even insuating that is the case is beyond dense though.

To be fair, if that's all they've got to go off I'd have been miffed if they hadn't stopped every black man wearing a black t-shirt with orange writing.

I would rule T-Keith out if that were true.

The jury at the inquest into the death of Jean Charles de Menezes will not be able to consider a verdict of unlawful killing, the coroner has said.

Sir Michael Wright said that having heard all the evidence, a verdict of unlawful killing was "not justified".

Mr de Menezes, 27, was shot dead at Stockwell Tube Station by police officers who mistook him for one of the failed 21 July 2005 bombers.

The jury may now return an open, narrative or lawful killing verdict.

Shouldn't that be up to the Jury? ;)

Basically he was unlawfully killed, but they've all successfully covered their asses enough that such a verdict would be "unacceptable". :icon_lol:

The jury at the inquest into the mistaken shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes has returned an open verdict.

Two officers shot Mr de Menezes seven times as he sat on a train at Stockwell Underground station, south London. They thought he was a suicide bomber.

The jury returned the verdict after deliberating for a week.

The family had earlier withdrawn from the inquest after the coroner said the jury could not return a verdict of unlawful death at the hands of police.

Sir Michael Wright, the coroner at the three-month-long inquest at the Oval Cricket Ground in London, said the facts did not justify allowing the jury to consider an unlawful killing.

Throughout the inquest, Metropolitan Police officers told the hearings they honestly believed the Brazilian was one of the four failed bombers who attempted to strike London on 21 July 2005.

Mr de Menezes' family and supporters challenged this version of events, saying they wanted answers to why surveillance officers could not identify the man they were following - and why two specialist officers shot the electrician at close range.

Sir Michael also asked the jury of 10 to tell him whether or not a series of events on 22 July 2005 contributed to the 27-year-old's death.

A majority of the jury said that they did not believe officers had shouted "armed police" before opening fire.

Turning to Mr de Menezes' actions, they said they believed he had stood up from his seat before being shot - but they did not believe he had moved towards the first officer to open fire.
