Can we get through the season with Butt?

Clearly Faye can play there, but I'd rather him as a CD. The other thing is if Capucinno comes in, Faye may be the one competing for the DM slot. I could be swayed but I don't think either Faye or Butt (legs not what they were??) have a good enough all-round game (distribution especially) to be our only two for the coming season.

I was under the impression that Guthrie was bought as the eventual successor for Butt, and someone who could challenge him for that spot this season?

Can only hope so, because as tidy a player as he appears to be his career thus far doesn't suggest he's much of a threat in the final third. The holding role would appear to be the way forward for him, and training alongside Butt to learn some of the finer points of that position from a defensive point of view can only help him.

Aside from the obvious lack of midfielders I think there's a bit of an obsession with 'specialist defensive midfielders' which stems from Mourinho employing Makele there to such good effect in his 4-5-1 / 4-3-3 formation. I don't think you necessarily need one in either a 4-4-2 or the 4-3-3 KK employed last season.

TBH it is the creative side of midfield which is of greatest worry, butt CAN do a job there, granted he hasnt the legs he used to (did he ever have pace) but he still puts himself about, tidying up infont of back four. Guthrie will be his eventual successor, he has a turn of pace and a good engine, though i dont see guthrie as a defensive midfielder, more of a box to box player so id imagine Butt Barton and guthrie to tustle for that spot, providing we sign a creative midfielder otherwise we'll most likely see a centre mid of Butt and Barton.

Dont get me wrong i dont think thats a bad centre mid but its not top 6 quality! Id rather see Barton or Guthrie in middle with the likes of moutinho or rakitic or am i dreaming?I just dont know what kind of player we can attract these days.

But going into the season with a midfield of.....N'Zogbia Butt Barton Gutierrez with duff, milner and guthrie waiting in the wings isnt as bad as people make out imo.

I still feel creative midfielder, centre half (coloccini can also play RB, Left back and a striker is what we need.

4 players in and i think we can push top 8

Good post, but frankly top 8 should be the baseline. If Wise and Co get their fingers out.

**Moutinho to Everton and Rakitic has CL footie.

I just dont think things are as bad as alot of people hea make out, alot are still in FFS days expecting token signings, big names on big wages, i quite like the fact that we arent going down the route of throwing money about and signing overated washed up mercenaries, guthrie to me is a good signing, and spiderman could be a brilliant signing, i seem alot of him last year and he was tremendous. I do concur with the majority that we need players in but my agreement end when people say we will be fighting relegation if we dont sign many more.

The squad we have is small but has quality, and im waering my buttet proof vest and helmet when i say this but i think smith could come good this year too, duff showing signs of improvement, its just the likes of geremi, ameobi and cacapa should of been offloaded since we shifted most the dead wood already!

Iv been silent for a while, reading and observing people feelings and though it pains me to say it danny b speaks alot of sence, and we should look at how spurs have come about the last 3 seasons whilst we have waned. Its about restrucuting, rebuilding, consolidating and hard work. People expect too much on hea imo...i dont think we will get into europe this season but im not ruling it out, this season to me is about having a full season under KK and MA together, setting things up for the future and stabelising the club, come january KK will know if Duff, Viduka, Smith, Geremi and Barton are going to cut it for us and them will have a good opinion on wether they stay or go.

Smith's an alright back-up striker imo. Especially when you consider where we are as a club at present. He's certainly better than he's shown and he played his best match for us upfront against Arsenal. The problem with him is though he's supposed to be versatile (one of the reason's he was signed) but he isn't - he's shite in midfield. On top of that he's on daft money and we were mugged (as usual) over the fee. We payed the same as Man Utd paid Leeds for him even though he'd been badly injured in his time there and lost form and confidence.

Agree 100% mate we were mugged and im not suprised he is on big wages, but the boy is passionate about football, he's not one to be happy with performing shit, you could see he was frustrated last year and im sure he will move heaven and earth to justify his fee and wages. Once his 1st goal comes that will lift his game imo.

Smith has been shocking for us but, and this is a big but, I thought he was looking good at Manu before he injuried himself, if he can find any kind of form (and I have more confidence in KK coaxing it out of him than the previous regime) then I would be more than happy that hes on the books

Hes passionate about his game and does always give alot, even if the final product is poor, consider we have a few players who are lazy AND have a poor final product hes certainly not the problem member

I'd agree with that due to the fact we weren't playing a more attacking centre midfielder. Butt/Barton/Geremi are all solid centre mids, who do lots of tracking back. Were we to have an Arshavin type plyer, who likes to dictate play from the final 3rd, in either a 4-4-2 or 4-5-1, I think you'd need a very disciplined holiding player.

You are right about it maybe being a fashionable position though. Ath the minute, however, most big teams do play a tough tackling, holding midfielder though. Barca-Toure, Real-Diarra, ManU-Carrick/Hargreaves, 'Pool-Mascherano/Sissoko.
