Tino announces retirement plans

By Patricio Figueroa - Created on 5 Oct 2005

Former Newcastle star Faustino Asprilla has announced his retirement and he is hoping to play a tribute match against The Magpies.

The flamboyant striker enjoyed a successful two-year spell at Newcastle and he was a huge fans' favourite at St James' Park.

The 35-year-old now believes the time is right to hang up his boots after a colourful career on and off the pitch.

Asprilla is now hoping to arrange a game with Newcastle as a celebration of his career.

"Despite that I am okay and feel that I could keep on playing I think that the moment of saying goodbye has arrived.

"I am organising my tribute match together with the officials and people of Newcastle.

"We still haven't put a date to the match but I hope that I can invite some ex team-mates that I had in Universidad de Chile and other teams."

Woah there Leazes, your bang out of order!

He's a legend, he was class. All this about had Keegan not signed him we would have won the league is a load of shite.

I would personally welcome Asprilla with a troop of dancing Spanish horses (i once saw a thing on World Soccer about him and his obsession with porn star girlfriends and dancing horses!) on the runway of Newcastle Airport.

It would be a fitting tribute to a master of skill & flamboyant football the likes of which is rarely seen.

Plus he'll get to go to the arcades at Metroland (his favourite haunt) while he's here!

Great player to watch. Should have been used rotationally, player can't be blamed for being picked!

Shame he had Dalgleish for a manager for most of his time here.

That's the difference Kenny couldn't recognise a player, hence he bought Maric! Keegan could but his tactical ineptness meant he didn't know how to use a player of this limitless ability. (Tino not Maric obviously)

He's not worth a testimonial or any other type of " celebration " of his career at the Toon. It's just a scam to line his pockets after being well paid. Anybody who attends must be off their rocker but a fool and his money are soon parted, as they say.

Funny I always thought Maric was signed by Gullit while Solano was spotted by Dalglish ...who also signed the likes of Guivarse, Andersson and Paul Dalglish...

It contributed to us losing that lead, there were other reasons so I don't blame him for that.

Over the time he was with us, he was largely a waste of space. Most of his best performances were in europe. In the premiership he was largely shite, he scored some goals, but so did Kluivert - admittedly he wasn't as shite as Kluivert though. And yes, the Barcelona night was his golden moment.

I realise I'm in the minority on this one, but I just like footballers who produce the goods on the pitch, not just flamboyance when they feel like it. Sorry mate.

I don't blame him at all for the title loss as that was down to Schmeichel, Cantona and prem refs being in Fergies back pocket, Tino had nowt to do with that.

But overall whilst he entertained at times, he went missing, was too greedy and didn't pass when he should and didn't get the goals and assists that win matches tha he should have done. In the prem his record really wasn't good enough and thats what it comes down to.

So he's worth remembering for Barca and some other great moments and goals, but had we say signed someone like Bergkamp instead of him we'd have won trophies from his consistent delivery when it counts.

don't think he lost us the title

don't think he done much for us

don't mind him setting up a testimonial(?) up here if it's not a benefit game for himself(he should have made enough,if he's blown it it's his fault)but for chariddee.

he has a cult following, may aswell use it for some good.

I remember the match when the lass ran onto the pitch topless and headed straight for Carl Serrant and gave him a kiss. Undoubtedly the highlight of his Toon career
