You couldn't make it up

Meanwhile, The National Portrait Gallery has launched a public appeal to raise £200,000 for Marc Quinn's self-portrait head cast made from frozen blood.

The gallery wants to buy the fourth head in a series, made in 2006, which is being sold by London's White Cube gallery for £350,000.

The Art Fund has offered a £100,000 grant and the National Portrait Gallery has found £50,000 from its own resources, leaving it to raise the remainder by December 31.

Quinn has made a new cast, using eight or nine pints of his own blood, every five years to document his ageing since 1991

Bollocks man, as thought we're the only country that funds arts etc. You might not like it but as Truman Capote once said, good taste is the enemy of art. You might not appreciate art but to attack its funding because of the perceived failings of the government is ridiculous. It's a mere drop in the ocean compared to what is wasted on Iraq for example.

Stop oppressing War as Art ffs.

I must admit though that the pose used for that statue is about the least atheistic (and likely not real) you could possibly choose. It's all about the shock value, nothing else is "art" any more.

Because they want to cast iy in AB- to truely reflect his uniqueness*

* I made this up purely because of:

a. the situation.

b. wykikitoon's silly question - there is no price on art except that which the buyer is willing to pay. dumb isn't it?

Erm, it is his own blood and they're not funding him to make it, he made it in 2006 and they're buying from the current owners. It didn't cost £350k to make that's just the price it'll cost them to buy it when it's sold, or in other words the market price for this particular piece of art. It doesn't cost £15m to make an Alan Shearer, or £16m to make a Michael Owen, those are simply the fees set by the market at the time - well maybe not the Owen one, but anyway.

That Kate Moss thing is shite like.
