Newcastle have told potential investors they must give a clear indication they want to make a bid for the club by Tuesday, BBC Sport understands.

Businessmen from America, the Far and Middle East make up a group of seven different potential buyers.

BBC Sport understands the takeover could be completed by the middle of November should serious buyers emerge on 7 October.

Owner Mike Ashley is believed to want about £250m to £300m for the club.

BBC Sport's Garry Richardson said on Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek programme: "It's hoped that Tuesday will be a significant day in the sale of the club.

"Interested parties who wish to buy Newcastle have been asked to make their intention clear by Tuesday as to whether they intend to make a serious bid for the club.

"If there are serious buyers who emerge by Tuesday, the sale could then be completed by the middle of November."

Ashley put the club up for sale in the wake of the sudden departure of former manager Kevin Keegan, but has insisted he will hold out for the right price.

A four-page 'teaser' document has been handed to interested parties, who have been asked to sign a confidentiality clause, outlining what is involved in buying the club.

On Friday, three South African businessmen linked with a possible £300m takeover denied they had any intention to buy the club, with billionaire Johann Rupert saying he had "absolutely no interest and no knowledge".

The South African group were considered to be the frontrunners - with their interest in bringing Keegan back making them popular with the fans.

A Nigerian consortium was also believed to have presented its bid of about £350m to the club, but Richardson added: "I have been told that there is no interest from Nigeria or South Africa".

Says what happens if there are serious offers, but not if there aren't.

Without a buyer on Tuesday is he taking the club off the market and staying to make a go of it?

If he thinks he'll get off scott free if he claims hes attempted to sell the club, but there werent any good enough offers so he'll carry on, then hes wrong. You'd think he'd realise we aren't all mugs after the first time

Can't see any way back for him. I think this is just an attempt to hurry the process along / see how interested said parties really are. That said, he can do whatever the fuck he wants given he owns the club outright.

The one big thing in our favour is that the club's value is highly unlikely to increase so the longer he hangs onto it the less he will eventually get for it, hopefully prompting a quick sale. In theory anyway :(

I think you're underestimating King Kinnear.

Probably reduce the price to a realistic level and set another deadline. ;):(

i can't imagine many will be interested at the prices quoted. man city went for much less than ashley wants, with a considerably better playing squad

That they hadn't paid for, which is why Shinawatra was desperate to sell.

The South African businessman Jonathan Cleland said last night he was "hopeful" of completing a takeover of Newcastle United. Cleland is heading a consortium of investors and has been in contact with the investment bank Seymour Pierce, who are in charge of finding a new buyer for Newcastle, over securing a potential £300m deal.

Cleland's interest in Newcastle was made public this month, only to be discredited when three South African billionaires, Johann Rupert, Brian Joffe and Vivian Imerman, who were also said to be involved in the consortium, stated they had no interest in buying out the current owner, Mike Ashley.

The Cleland bid also took a knock from Keith Harris, the chairman of Seymour Pierce, who described it this week as not being a "serious" offer, but Cleland insists the takeover attempt is genuine - and having spent the past week in South Africa shoring up investment, claims to be in a position to move on to the St James' Park board with immediate effect.

"We're hopeful of still doing a deal for Newcastle United very soon," Cleland told the Guardian, although he was unwilling to discuss who else was part of the consortium.

Jonathan Cleland - did you know that by simply jumbling up the letters of his name, adding a few more and discarding the J you get:

"Total and utter absolute fucking charlatan and con merchant of the highest order so full of shite its unbelievable but still more believable than that Peter Lee bloke"
