Admittedly, its from that bastion of big news, the Blackpool Gazette.

HULL CITY boss Phil Brown wants to rescue former Manchester United star Alan Smith from his Newcastle United nightmare, according to reports.

The News of the World claims Brown will be handed a massive transfer kitty to spend in the New Year and has put the England star on his wanted list.

Smith has not played a single game for the Toon this season and is one of the many stars desperate to leave St James' Park.

He was hoping to join Everton earlier this season but the deal fell through - and now Brown is poised to offer the former Manchester United striker a chance to resurrect his top-flight career.

Smith could join the Tigers on loan until the end of the season with a view to making the deal permanent for around £3million.
