XP not loading up

It was fine last night, I came on this morning and all was normal but while I was on the internet (this website actually :nufc: ) my computer just restarted itself. Now, everytime I try to turn on my computer it restarts after the XP loading screen... Don't really want to format because I'll lose everything but it looks like I'll have to. <_<

when you power up, just after the bios screen appears

tap F8 a few times

if you get the windows boot menu, try safe mode

if it lets you login, try a system restore

start>programs>accessiories>system tools>System Restore

pick a date a couple of days before things started going tits up

Sounds like you're getting the BSOD without actually seeing it.

Stick your XP disk in the machine and choose to go into recovery mode. When you get to the command prompt, type chkdsk /p

Once done, reboot and hopefully all will be OK. If still not working, try the same routine but with a /r instead of the /p.

If it still doesn't fix it then see if you can find a machine that you can stick the hard-drive in as a slave and run chkdsk /f from within the operating system of that machine.

Went on safemode and it loaded up fine, opened command prompt and tried to run the first two commands... /p never worked but /r scheduled itself for next restart. It did it but it didn't fix the problem, so I tried to run windows with 'last known good config'... That didn't work and now I can't run safemode at all, it stops on one of the commands.

Shall I just try my hard-drive in another computer or just format?

If it's just stuff you want off a Linux liveCD should do the trick, so long as you have a CD burner/USB or whatever.

I'd try sticking it in another machine as a slave and perform a low-level chkdsk (chkdsk /f)

It 'should' fix the issue as it sounds like it's your system files which are damaged - the data should be OK but if you perform a format, you'll lose it.

I'll give it a go mate, cheers.

hopefully the machine you use will be the same interface as the hard drive in question (IDE, SATA, etc)

FWIW - investing one of these is a good idea http://www.ebuyer.com/product/136214

I was having the same problem with Vista the other day. If you haven't already tried then remove all USB device before booting and if that works then just use trial and error to find out which one is causing the problem.

Thats exactly what happened to me after installing Microsoft updates, it was my wireless adapter causing the problem. Quit uninstall and re-install and everything was hunky dorey. The thought of losing all that porn, ouch. :icon_lol:

Tried everything in the thread apart from putting my hard-drive in another computer because I couldn't really be arsed and nothing worked so I just formatted in the end. :)

With MY cd :icon_lol:

Linux live CD/DvD should have worked (to get your files off anyway).

  • 3 weeks later...
Happened again on Friday, hard-drives fucked I think.

Could be and it's probably the most likely candidate, but it could be the motherboard or even the power pack playing up and ending in similar results.
