Troubled former football star Paul Gascoigne is being taken to the High Court by HM Revenue and Customs over unpaid tax. The 41-year-old, who was recently treated for alcohol and drug problems, could be declared bankrupt if he cannot pay his tax debts. At the peak of his career he was one of football's highest paid stars, reported to be worth £14m.

The case, due to be heard on Thursday, was adjourned to 9 January. His solicitor said: "He needed time to sort out his professional affairs and liquidate assets in order to pay some unpaid tax." Paul Gascoigne became a millionaire overnight when he was transferred from Newcastle to Spurs in 1988, and later secured a £1.25m deal with Italian club Lazio.

As star of the England squad, he won sponsorship deals worth more than £5m with sports clothing manufacturers and also with Walkers crisps.

To rehash an old Georgie Best joke, Im assuming he means take back the empties.
