Police to be armed with stun guns

Tasers have been fired more than 1,000 times since 2004

About 30,000 police officers across all forces in England and Wales are to be trained to use Taser stun guns.

Currently, only specialist firearms officers carry the weapon, which can temporarily disable a suspect.

But ministers will announce plans later to buy 10,000 more Tasers and extend their use to all frontline officers.

The Home Office says Tasers have helped to resolve incidents without injury but Amnesty International warns against using them as tools of routine force.

Electric shock

In recent years, Tasers have become standard police equipment in the UK and have been regarded as a less dangerous alternative to guns. They deliver an electric shock by two barbed darts trailing wires.

Police officers in England and Wales have fired the 50,000-volt stun guns more than 1,000 times since 2004.

Now the Home Office is understood to be about to unveil plans to spend £8m on 10,000 new Tasers.

This follows a year-long pilot scheme which saw their use extended to frontline officers in 10 police forces.

TASER FACTS

Deliver electric shocks to temporarily paralyse target

Do this by using compressed air to fire two darts that trail electric cable back to the handset

Five-second 50,000-volt charge is released down the cable

Laser helps with aim. Gun works at up to 21ft (6.5m)

When fired, up to 40 ID tags released identifying the officer

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith told the Sunday Times she was proud police in England and Wales did not regularly carry firearms and that was how she wanted it to stay.

She added: "But every day the police put themselves in danger to protect us, the public. They deserve our support, so I want to give the police the tools they tell me they need to confront dangerous people."

The move has been welcomed by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO).

It said trials showed in the majority of cases Tasers helped police resolve incidents without resorting to a weapon.

But Oliver Sprague, of Amnesty International UK, said: "Tasers are potentially lethal weapons which are already linked to numerous deaths in north America.

"That's why wide deployment without adequate training is a dangerous step too far for British policing."

He called on the home secretary to urgently review the decision and ensure Tasers were handled by a small number of fully-trained officers.

Like I said ages ago, they are bound for general use now, much like CS spray, and just like CS spray they are already being used in totally inappropriate ways (and the first UK taser death has already occurred).

Once again I think Fop's trademark, agenda based thread subtitle threatens to de-rail a potentially decent and legitimate debate before it's even had a chance to get started. Shame tbh.

Once again you have much to learn. :D

Toy gun tbh.

Would you prefer the police had real guns, like 99% of police forces do internationally?

They still kill a lot of people, several hundred at least killed in the USA by police with tasers, and a few killed in the UK by police with them already.

Plus, of course, the police have guns here, only with specially and specifically trained officers (and that's not foolproof - look at Jean Charles De Menzes).

Which is the worst issue about this, originally they said tasers were only being trialled and would only be used by specially trained units in situation where a gun would otherwise be used, but not really needed - I said they'd be generally rolled out like CS spray was sooner or later, a lot on here screamed "police hate!!! it'll never happen". :aye:

Then They Came For The People With Dicky Tickers, And I Did Not Speak Out

They've already killed a few in the UK like that, once they are tasering everyone for anything the death toll will soar, just like in the USA. :D

Honestly, have you learnt nothing? :)

You don't say. ;)

Not just me, Amnesty International, the United Nations (tasers are a UN deemed instrument of torture :D) and a few others too. :(

Fop presents the argument against and represents an argument for, both at the same time.

Yes I suspect they will be used to suppress freedom of speech, you're right. Much like CS Spray they'll go from last resort to first choice very quickly (in fact even in the "trial" period this has already been the case). :D

Aye, right, people are CS sprayed all the time for no reason.

I'd love you to live in a country with a real shit, corrupt police force Fop.

Actually they are. You do realise that when it was first implemented CS spray was also supposed to be a weapon of last resort and only to be used after specific training.

Now handed out routinely and it's used more like a cattle-prod (which goes under the UN torture guidelines again).

That's the whole point. :D

They don't magically appear, they march step by step as the general population of sheep.gif baaaa and get herded along.

It's the same problem you'll get with anything concerning the police, i.e. if it is used incorrectly / at the wrong time etc. (and especially if it leads to death or serious injury) they'll tend to lie about it to cover their backs. I would have concerns about it being used 'willy nilly' by them as well. This has been done to death on here about 3 or 4 times now btw.

If sufficient warning is given I can't see it being a problem.

*ZAP*

More people will die that otherwise wouldn't.

And it will (and already is) being used as an enforcement/torture tool rather than a weapon of nearly last resort........ but on the upside it should save on a lot of police overtime on the next sit in demonstration.

Just taser the fuckers 912.png a bit and they won't all be arm linked together any more :D, do the job in 1/4 of the time. :aye:
