In all seriousness, I'm sure that St. James' Park could easily be expanded to 60 000+. There were plans afoot towards the end of the Shepherd administration for this. Of course we'd be better off focussing on moving up the league again first :(

Would cost a lot of money because we'd have to pay for strengthening the foundations around the Metro Station. I'm nee civil engineer, but have been told it's not as straight forward as sticking the stand up. The East Stand is a no no unless someone burns those Georgian student houses down. It's a shame because 60-65,000 would be about right for us.

That was Freddie Fletcher's old line, that we couldnt build out because of the Metro line. Fairly sure one of the guys on here debunked it, though.

That rings a bell  It aint gonna happen anyhow, so let's forget it. I said years ago that 50k was about the right size, as I thought ppv telly was going to be the big money spinner (especially for NUFC due the huge passive fanbase), but I guess the genie is out of the bottle now, what with all t'internet streams sloshing around (see what I did there, eh? Eh?).

Aye it's bollocks - piles do need to be sunk into the confinds of the metro station but contrary to popular belief, they miss the lines by quite some way. It's all a myth anyway and easily disproved when you consider the next station along the line has 130ft of limestone monument sat right on top of it, not to mention Fenwicks and Monument Mall which sections of also sit directly above it.

The piles for the existing Gallowgate stand were sunk considerably deeper than required in 1994 for the very eventuality that we may expand further. Plans are in existance to mirror the leazes end but I believe the encorporated some form of indoor shopping mall / leisure facilities instead of a road through (as at the the other end of the ground). Makes sense so that Shearers and the club shop still exist but exit into an indoor mall. Casino and hotel if it had happened would have been over the other side and I think there was plans to give the Strawberry an exit into it to.

I've been told that plans also exist for the East Stand expansion too but I've never seen them. Rumour is that it's a staggered tier with the top one overlaying the bottom one so that those sitting in the front row of the top tier would be in line with the pitch rather than further back from the pitch than the last row of the existing tier as with the other three sides of the ground. Would not be uniform with the rest of the ground but tbh there's no alternative. It'd also almost certainly mean supporting columns in the lower tier too which is a downside.

It's all moot anyway - we struggle to fill it at present and Ashley won't spend on the ground anyway - doesn't make one iota of sense for him to do so when he's inherited the 4th best stadium in England.
