For those who are saying he'd regret going to Citeh (and Spurs for that matter) because money aside, they're no better than us need to have a think like...

Both these clubs are displaying one thing in abundance that we're not.... ambition! And that's one of the things that Shay is getting frustrated at.

wouldnt be surprised if city held back any offer until just before the deadline date, giving us little or no time to spend the money. Tactical perhaps; they are after all in the dog fight themselves.

NEWCASTLE United have labelled a £3m offer from Manchester City for Shay Given an insult as they continue to fight to keep the goalkeeper at St James’s Park.

The Magpies are expected to announce their first signing of the transfer window on Monday when Danish international forward Peter Lovenkrands moves to St James’s Park, but it is the future of Given which continues to dominate the agenda.

City’s offer was immediately rejected by the Magpies on Friday and manager Joe Kinnear continues to argue he has no intention of allowing the Republic of Ireland international to leave.

Whether Newcastle’s resolve would be as strong should City make a double-figure bid next week remains to be seen, but Given will possibly also feel the offer is a derogatory one given the financial muscle Mark Hughes has as a result of the club’s oil-rich Arab backers. A senior United source said: "We received a bid for Shay in writing from Manchester City and we dismissed it out of hand.

"It was for between three and four million pounds, which is laughable really when you consider we are talking about the best goalkeeper in the Premier League."

United are incensed by City’s offer, particularly in light of the £9m paid by Sunderland to take Scotland international Craig Gordon to the Stadium of Light last season.

When The Journal contacted Kinnear last night he was also aware of the bid, but remains adamant he will not entertain the idea of losing the 32-year-old.

Newcastle’s fiery manager was in typically forthright voice, as he also attacked agents and mischief makers in the media for trying to unsettle his players.

He said: "I’ve remained consistent on this matter all the way through. I do not want to lose any of my best players and Shay is one of those. I’m far more interested in who we are trying to bring in to strengthen the squad.

"It’s unhelpful to say the least at the moment to have agents trying to unsettle my players. There have

also been a lot of untrue reports in the media about Alan Smith and Joey Barton (leaving), which have angered me and the players concerned.

"Then there is Charles N’Zogbia’s agent hawking him around all over the place. Charles has said it has all come from his agent, but we have had no contact with Tottenham or Aston Villa and I know their managers very well so I think they would have picked up the phone.

"We are looking into it and if we find there has been anything illegal done we will take appropriate action. We’re sick of having to put up with this crap.

"This job is difficult enough as it is without all this going on. The transfer window is a tough period for a manager, but I’ll just get on with it."

Kinnear will give N’Zogbia a late fitness test today before naming his team to play West Ham, but he admitted he is struggling to put out a side of senior players because there are nine missing through injury or suspension.

He said: "I’ve got 11, maybe 12 senior players who are fit and able to play against West Ham, which is a very difficult situation to be in. It’s tough but I’m always an optimist.

"We’ll have a lot of kids on the bench and we’re being stretched to breaking point, but I still feel we are good enough to beat West Ham."

Kinnear’s ranks, though, will hopefully be boosted by the arrival of Lovenkrands, who is a free agent having had his contract at German Bundesliga side Schalke terminated by mutual consent this week with six months of it to run.

The 28-year-old, who can play on either wing or directly through the middle, is due to discuss personal terms over the weekend having turned down a move to Newcastle eight years ago in favour of joining Glasgow Rangers.

The Danish international, whose wife is Scottish, had been interested in a return to Ibrox, but the Scottish giants do not have the money to pay his wages.

That helps explain their willingness to negotiate with Newcastle over the possible transfers of captain Barry Ferguson and full-back Madjid Bougherra. Newcastle have made a bid of around £3.5m for Bougherra and are monitoring Ferguson’s situation following an indication from within Ibrox that the Scotland international will be allowed to leave for around £3m following the collapse of Kris Boyd’s move to Birmingham City earlier this week.

Cheeky twats :icon_lol: a third of the amount Gordon went for!!!!

At the same time, this is what happens when you have players stating they want to leave and a manager at the same time stating we need to sell to buy other much needed players. It doesnt work, they know we're desperate and that the player wants to leave, offer us shit and him more wages.

NEWCASTLE United have rebuffed Manchester City’s opening bid for Shay Given — by demanding midfielder Michael Johnson AND cash in part-exchange.

And if City are willing to also part with defender Nedum Onuoha, United would be willing to do a straight swap for their unsettled goalkeeper.

Magpies boss Joe Kinnear is seething at City’s cheeky sub-£4 million bid for Given, but will sell the Irishman if Johnson and, ideally, his fellow England Under-21 international Onuoha arrive on Tyneside in return.

With Kinnear aware that, as in August, offers for ANY of Newcastle player will be considered this month, the prospect of a part-exchange deal holds particular appeal.

West Ham want Johnson, main picture, as part of Newcastle old boy Scott Parker’s proposed move to Eastlands, but City’s 20-year-old would prefer a move north rather than south.

After an impressive rise to prominence as a teenager, which attracted the attention of Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, Johnson was rewarded with a new five-year contract last summer.

But his progress has been stunted by injuries, and while sitting out the last four months with a pelvic problem, Johnson has seen Stephen Ireland shine in his absence.

That is why United are now working to convince City to part with a player who would address Kinnear’s desperate need for extra drive and creativity in midfield.

And Newcastle are also keen on 22-year-old Onuoha, versatile enough to play right across the back four.

Versatility is one reason former Rangers star Peter Lovenkrands is set to arrive at St James’s Park. The 28-year-old’s free agent status is another.

Another Scandinavian winger, SK Brann’s Erik Huseklepp, has also caught the eye as Newcastle shop on the cheap.

But failure to land Johnson — whose City team-mate Jo, the struggling Brazilian striker, has also been on Kinnear’s radar — could see the Magpies move for Portugal playmaker Raul Meireles.

Newcastle’s director of football Dennis Wise has placed Porto ace Meireles, who is now a regular for Portugal and rated at £4m, high on a shortlist of mainly Iberian-based targets, which also includes Real Mallorca striker Pierre Webo.

But unless players leave St James’s, Lovenkrands may be Kinnear’s only attacking signing, with a left-back his other main priority.

A loan move for Roma’s John Arne Riise is back on the agenda, and Midlands sources suggest Coventry youngster Daniel Fox is a longer-term Toon target.

According to my fairly reliable source he wanted to stay, break the appearance record and set up here for the rest of his career but over the past few months he's started to get fed up of the goings on at the club and the Liverpool match was the final straw. He basically thinks we've got more chance of sinking like a stone than winning a trophy so he wants away.

He's right.

Are they going out of their way to piss us off? He makes Ameobi look good.

left-back a priority yes, but we need more midfield. Would like to see Johnson here though and Onuoha if he can pull it off...

If he was to go to man city there would only be one deal id be interested in an that would be Joe Hart + Michael Johnson for Shay Given. Period.

Why Joe Hart? Harper is a perfectly fine mid-table Premiership keeper and Krul/Forster should be at the point where they can be relied on as dependable back-up.

Harpers out of contract and is stalling on a new one - could very easily go from having 2 great keepers to having none

Arguably at his peak in terms of keepers ages
