Owen worry

Stories sweeping the city of a training ground injury sustained by Michael Owen seem to have further depressed an already down-beat support following Saturday's poor show.

However we understand that the England striker pulled up after feeling a hamstring twinge and his involvement in Tuesday's training session was curtailed as a precautionary measure.

Hopes remain high that Owen will still feature in his first Tyne-wear derby on Sunday, but a safety-first approach saw Ameobi pulled out of Tuesday's reserve team defeat at Birmingham in case he picked up a knock.

From SKY SPORTS

Michael Owen has hurt his hamstring during a practice match ahead of the North East derby on Sunday.

The Newcastle United striker lasted only 20 minutes of the training game and is rated doubtful for the PremPlus encounter with Sunderland.

As it is an area where the former Liverpool star has suffered problems in the past, it will be of some concern to manager Graeme Souness.

Although it is believed the withdrawal of the big-money signing from Real Madrid was a precautionary measure, it leaves him facing a race against time to be ready to take part in the frenzied atmosphere of the Tyne-Wear derby.

It is the latest injury setback for Souness to contend with after defender Craig Moore failed to come through a reserve team outing with Birmingham unscathed.

Deputy goalkeeper Steve Harper also picked up a knock but it is the Owen injury which will be most pressing for The Magpies.

GRAEME Souness says he is still hopeful Michael Owen will be available for Sunday's Tyne-Wear derby with Sunderland, despite admitting there is "a doubt" about the striker's fitness.

The Magpies' record signing reported a sore hamstring on Tuesday and his condition will be monitored closely in the days leading up to the sell-out clash at St. James' Park.

United say they will know more about Owen's chances by Friday. Nevertheless, boss Souness says no gamble will be taken with any player's fitness.

He told nufc.co.uk: "There is a doubt about him, but we are hopeful.

"We are hoping he is going to be available for Sunday, but obviously with hamstrings being what they are, we cannot take any chances."

He's going to play. Souness knows deep down that he's the only person in the team putting the ball in the back of the net from open play and if we don't beat the filth from down the road he's out of his job. I think he's going to take the risk.

Its getting beyond a joke now!

In the chronicle there was a very interesting article by Steve Black about fitness, soft tissue muscle injuries and the like and he pointed out that the Falcons (who he works for) using his techniques have the lowest number of these injuries of teams in pretty much any sport! They haven't had any for months.

He worked with us Keegan-era didn't he?

Did he offer any solutions?

He did work under Keegan and its noticeable that whilst we got some crap luck with key injuries we didn't have half our team out with hamstring strains and thig injuries etc. Also Keegans team were always fit enough to be playing well for 90 mins, not looking jaded second half and incapable of fighting back.

He did have his own methods and choices he makes and is actually writing a paper on it, but unless we employ him we won't see the benefits of it.
