Newcastle United have firmed up their interest in Michael Johnson by lodging a bid for the Manchester City midfielder, skysports.com understands.

Joe Kinnear and Newcastle's hierarchy are huge fans of the England Under-21 international, who appears ready to leave Eastlands.

Skysports.com understands that Johnson is very much open to the idea heading to the North East and Newcastle are hopeful they can conclude a deal before the 5pm deadline.

City value Johnson highly, but Newcastle are believed to be offering around £8million and they are confident that will be enough for City to sell.

Johnson only agreed a new five-year deal in September, but Mark Hughes seemingly has other ideas for his first team and Newcastle are ready to pounce.

The likes of Aston Villa, Liverpool and Everton have all shown an interest in the past, but Newcastle look set to pull off a big coup if they can finalise the move in the next few hours.

If they are going to pay 8 mil for Johnson why not add a few more mil to that and slap a bid in for Veloso?

I'd like Veloso here, but there's a chance that he might be a bit lightweight for the PL. Johnson has 2 seasons or so PL experience.

What I mean is how they deal with a quicker pace. Viana wasn't a midget, but the pace of English footy seemed a bit much for him, getting harried by Delaps and Nolan's and the sort you don't get in Portugal, where you have more time on the ball.

There is no comparison between Veloso and Johonson. One is borderline world class and the other is a reasonable PL player.

Borderline world class, linked with Bolton and Newcastle...

They're running a debt of 130m Euro.

While the thought of signing Veloso is far more exciting, Johnson would probably be a considerably safer bet for us at the minute.

We're getting Johnson anyway, but 8m seems a lot?? Non?

Even more reason for bigger clubs to be sniffing round if he is borderline world class.
